The Yves Landry Foundation receives Canadian Government funding support through FedNor to develop programs and initiatives that promote business growth and competitiveness through small business funding grants. AIME Northern provides up to $50k in non-repayable grants on a cost-matching basis for manufacturers planning to implement a training program for new software and production processes. The new software and processes must support innovation leading to improvements in global competitiveness and market expansion.? YLF will cover up to 50% of the eligible costs, these might include but are not limited to:

• IRAP Accelerated Review Process (ARP): Participants can receive up to $50K in government grants covering 100% of the direct labour and 75% of the sub-contractors employer for a technical research and development project.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Democrats and liberal advocacy groups have declared victory in what they called a Republican "war on women" and are celebrating the pivotal defeats of some GOP candidates who took rigid stands against abortion.

However, the issues in dispute ? notably access to contraception and abortion ? are far from settled, and social conservatives are already girding for new confrontations.

"We're going back to the drawing board," anti-abortion leader Marjorie Dannenfelser told fellow conservatives at a post-election gathering.

Dannensfelser said her organization, the Susan B. Anthony List, would seek to back candidates who can argue against abortion "with compassion and love." In an interview, she said Republican nominee Mitt Romney was too defensive on abortion-related issues and mentioned Florida Sen. Marco Rubio and Indiana Gov.-elect Mike Pence as potential presidential candidates who intrigued her.

For activists supporting family planning programs and access to abortion, the election produced a series of triumphs, starting with the re-election of President Barack Obama. Groups such as Planned Parenthood and the National Organization for Women campaigned vigorously for him, and he won about 55 percent of women's votes.

"This is a resounding victory for women," said Planned Parenthood's president, Cecile Richards. "This election sends a powerful and unmistakable message ... that the American people do not want politicians to meddle in our personal medical decisions, and that politicians demean and dismiss women at their own peril."

The differences between Obama and Romney on some "war on women" issues were stark. Obama vowed to require insurance companies to cover birth control, preserve federal funding for Planned Parenthood, and protect access to abortion. Romney took opposing positions, and said he'd like to outlaw abortion except in cases of rape, incest and threat to the mother's life.

According to exit polls conducted for The Associated Press and TV networks, 59 percent of voters said abortion should be legal either in all or most cases, while 36 percent said it should be illegal all or most of the time.

Planned Parenthood and its allies celebrated the outcomes of a host of specific races, including the defeats of two Tea Party-backed GOP Senate candidates whose chances plummeted after widely criticized remarks about rape and abortion. In Missouri, Todd Akin said women's bodies have ways of avoiding pregnancy in instances of "legitimate rape," while Indiana's Richard Mourdock said pregnancy resulting from rape was "something God intended."

Akin's rival, Claire McCaskill, will be one of a record 20 women in the next Senate, 17 of them Democrats. Among them will be the first openly gay senator, Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin, and the first Asian-American woman, Hawaii's Mazie Hirono.

In New Hampshire, wins by two Democrats in House races gives the state, which has two female senators, the first all-women delegation to Congress. It also has a newly elected woman as governor, Maggie Hassan.

Even though the abortion/contraception debate gained prominence during the campaign, exit polls indicated it wasn't the paramount concern for many women worried about economic problems.

Elisabeth Jacobs, a fellow in governance studies at the nonpartisan Brookings Institution think tank, suggested there was a connection between the two issues that perhaps cost the Republicans the election.

"It's pretty clear that at the last minute, a lot of women made a decision that Obama really understood what their economic concerns were," she said. "Yes, they want control over their own body ... but decisions over health care can limit their ability to control economics as well."

She said conservative Republicans face a challenge: "How can you package the pro-life message in a way that speaks to women's economic concerns? I don't know how they do that."

A conservative domestic policy specialist, Jennifer Marshall of the Heritage Foundation, said Republican candidates would be wise to broaden the scope of their anti-abortion message to convey interest in "the welfare of the mother and the community around her." She said candidates willing to talk openly about abortion issues would be more agile at articulating their positions than those who shied away from the topic.

One complication for the Republicans was the party platform, which opposes abortion even in cases of rape and incest.

David Welch, a former GOP National Committee research director and campaign adviser to John McCain, blamed Tea Party activists for this hard line

"The Tea Party folks who've started this race to the bottom, of who can be more conservative, have really done the party damage," Welch said. "We'll always be a pro-life party, but we have to be compassionate about it."

Going forward, anti-abortion activists and organizations will use a variety of strategies to pursue their cause under an Obama presidency.

At the state level, there will be continued efforts in Republican-controlled legislatures to enact laws restricting access to abortion.

"We refuse to relent simply because of the presidential outcome," said Mike Gonidakis, president of Ohio Right to Life. His group plans to push for defunding of Planned Parenthood and for additional preconditions before abortions can be performed.

Roman Catholic leaders, along with some conservative Protestants, say they will intensify legal challenges to the portion of Obama's health care overhaul that requires employers' health plans to cover contraception for their female employees. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops says this contraception mandate ? which exempts houses of worship but applies to faith-affiliated employers ? is a violation of religious freedom.

There's also the possibility of outright defiance.

The Rev. Frank Pavone, national director of Priests for Life, said the Obama administration and the Catholic Church "are on a collision course."

"It is therefore time to recommit ourselves to the basics: a clear proclamation of the truth ... and an unwavering commitment to civil disobedience," he said.

Some supporters of women's rights expressed regret that their cherished issues had become so entangled in political partisanship.

"It was not long ago that issues like fair pay, abortion rights, health reform, and family and medical leave had bipartisan support, said Debra Ness, president of the National Partnership for Women and Families. "We hope they will all have bipartisan support again very soon."

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama is sounding a conciliatory tone after his re-election victory, saying he has learned from those who supported him and those who opposed him. And he says he returns to Washington "more determined" and "more inspired."

He said he's hoping to work with Republicans to solve the nation's problems.

He spoke to a cheering crowd in Chicago shortly after Mitt Romney told supporters in Boston that it's time for the nation to unite behind the president.

Obama said he wants to meet with Romney to discuss how to work together.

As he starts his second term, Obama will once again be dealing with a Republican-controlled House and a Senate led by Democrats.

Google's Internet Marketing Empire Revealed in Statistics

Google is the world?s most popular search engine and its popularity has created one of the most influential businesses on the planet, but how much money does it make from paid search results and ads each day? Read on to find out.

Google?s Impact

It is important for anyone hoping to get into the world of search engine optimisation to appreciate the nuances of Google, because this is the service that is going to channel the largest number of potential customers in the direction of your site.

You can use an SEO company in order to optimise your site so that it naturally appears towards the top of Google?s organic rankings. However, many choose to take the paid approach, with sponsored search links and ad listings harnessed in order to drive traffic and improve conversions.

While social networks and other services have begun to play an important role, Google is still the dominant force in this particular area of the online marketplace and will continue to hold this position indefinitely.

Lakers win one for their coach

You can't lose them all.

Mike Brown made one wonder whether it was possible over the season's first three games, nobody doing less with more than the Lakers coach.

Four potential Hall of Famers who had never played together meet the Princeton offense.

A defense that was supposed to be the coach's hallmark yielded triple digits more often than Palm Springs in July.

Kobe Bryant, his foot sore and his career-minutes odometer about to turn over already forced into excessive playing time early in the season.

Brown remained as affable as ever throughout his team's 0-3 start, though he might have provided a glimpse into the strain he was feeling Sunday evening when he sighed deeply before walking down a hallway to meet with reporters.

He could exhale a few hours later.

The Lakers walloped the pitiful Detroit Pistons, 108-79, at Staples Center for their first victory, sparing further forays into the record books in search of historically bad starts.

The triumph also momentarily ceased the chatter about whether Brown would be history.

"I think it's more of a relief for Mike than it is for anybody else," Bryant said. "We're good."

Brown was reluctant to use the R-word, at least when it pertained to himself.

"Some people may look at it as a relief," Brown said, "but I look it as a good win because we needed it, but not a whew, not one of those. I'm excited about the way we played the game and won the game."

Oh, he needed it all right.

Any question about this game's meaning to Brown was answered early in the fourth quarter when the coach sent Bryant and Dwight Howard back onto the court with the Lakers holding a 24-point advantage.

"That was more just helping Mike out, man," Bryant said, "so he wouldn't have an ulcer over there or a heart attack over there."

Brown actually spent much of the game cheering.

He leaped off the bench and emphatically pumped his fist in the first quarter after Bryant made a three-pointer. He clapped in the third quarter when Bryant buried another long jumper and put his hands together again in the fourth when the struggling Antawn Jamison made a three-pointer.

This was more like what Brown said he expected his purported super team to look like, tallying 27 assists on 40 made field goals and committing only 15 turnovers.

"You look at the points some of these guys had and I'm sure they'll tell you they scored probably easier than any other time they've played the game because they got it within the system and so it gives us a little relief," Brown said. "And every win that we get gives us a little bit more relief on both ends of the floor."

It also presumably provided some respite for Brown in cyberspace.

In the wake of the Lakers' horrid start, one message board ran a poll asking which coach fans wanted to replace Brown ? Phil Jackson, Nate McMillan and Mike D'Antoni were among the options ? with Jackson a runaway winner.

On another thread, fans were asked whether they preferred having as their head coach Brown or a raw, uncooked potato. The potato won in a landslide.

Jamison said Brown was not to blame for his team's shortcomings.

"It hasn't been his fault, the reason that we started 0-3, but that's the day and age that we live in," Jamison said. "If things are going great, it's the players, but when they're not, they put it all on the coach. Mike has been upfront with us from Day 1 telling us what he expects out of us on both ends of the floor. We just haven't done that."

They did Sunday, though much tougher tests await than the winless Pistons.

And the Lakers will have to take them for a while without point guard Steve Nash, who will be sidelined for up to a month by a broken leg.

But this was a start that the Lakers desperately needed in a season they expect to stretch into June.

"Come February, and you hope it happens before then, when guys really have a grasp of what we're doing," Brown said, "I think it's going to be really, really neat, and it could be something special on that end of the floor. So I'm excited."

Gisele Bundchen and Tom Brady took advantage of the Patriots bye week off and headed to Miami for a romantic getaway this weekend. Tom and Gisele were spotted out on a dinner date on Saturday evening, and on Sunday, she hit the beach in a bikini. The two-piece swimsuit showed off her growing baby bump. Tom and Gisele are expecting their second child together in early 2013, and the new addition will join big brothers Benjamin and Jack, the latter from Tom's prior relationship with Bridget Moynahan. Tom has been busy with his football season, so the weekend break is probably a welcome one for the family. When she's not cheering on her husband, Gisele has been nesting in Boston, though she did have a sad moment recently when her beloved dog Vida passed away.

Military Rec: Last chance to join Joint Special Operations 10k run

The website for the Special Operations Communicators Association contains a list of raves for the organization's annual Joint Special Operations 10k.

One comment succinctly sums the race up this way: "If it's not raining, cold and muddy, It's not the JSO 10k."

If that sounds like your kind of race, sign up pronto.

Registration for the 16th annual Joint Special Operations 10k Run/5k Walk closes today.

Racers have until midnight to preregister for the event, which is scheduled for a 10 a.m. start Nov. 10 at McKellar's Lodge on Fort Bragg.

Online registration is available through active.com by searching for the race name. The cost to participate is $30.

Same-day registration will be available between 6 and 7:30 a.m, but it's advisable to register early to avoid a rush and guarantee a spot in the race.

The annual race is sponsored by the SOCA and is one of two annual fundraising events held by the organization, which also hosts a golf tournament each spring.

The JSO 10k is wildly popular, drawing a race record of 980 participants last year, according to the SOCA's website.

The field will be capped at 1,000 runners this year, so save a spot early.

You can avoid the lines for race packet pickup, as well, by taking advantage of early pickup Thursday from 3 to 7 p.m. at Sports USA and Friday from noon to 3 p.m. at Dick's Sporting Goods on Skibo Road.

The 10k route is a USA Track and Field certified cross-country course, and participants can expect to run on sand, mud and rocks along the way.

The race is open to anyone - military or civilian - of any age, but pets are not allowed. Sturdy jogging strollers are OK, but street strollers won't cut it in the terrain. Children who are carried or in a stroller don't have to register.

Only 10k runners will be timed using electronic timing bibs. Walkers on the 5k route will not be timed.

That is the provocative question at the heart of a bold new trend slowly circling the literary world.

The U.K., Australia, and Canada apparently think so. Citing gaping gender disparities between recognition of men and women writers, each has launched literary awards just for female writers.

The latest, Canada?s Rosalind Prize for Fiction, was conceived during the Vancouver Writers Fest as a group of women, including the founder of the U.K.?s TK, were discussing the ?extreme gender inequality in the awarding of literary prizes both internationally, and in Canada,? according to Canada?s Globe and Mail.

One audience member, Janice Zawerbny, editorial director at Thomas Allen Publishers, was so moved by what she heard, she decided to do something about it.

?I was shocked and dismayed,? she told the Globe and Mail. ?I just felt compelled to take action.?

Thus was the Rosalind Prize for Fiction born, a literary prize exclusively for female writers of fiction in Canada.

The prize is named after the sharp and witty female protagonist in Shakespeare?s play, ?As You Like It.?? It?s also the name of British biophysicist Rosalind Franklin, whose largely overlooked contributions helped lay the groundwork for the discovery of DNA.

Zawerbny hopes to present the inaugural Rosalind Prize in 2014.

That?s one year after Australia will award its first Stella Prize, that country?s first major literary award for women. Named after novelist Stella Maria Miles Franklin (?My Brilliant Career?), the $50,000 prize is open for both fiction and non-fiction.

?The Stella Prize will raise the profile and the sales of books by women,? Stella Prize Chair Aviva Tuffield said of the award, according to the blog IndieWire. ?We want to encourage future generations of women writers, by increasing the recognition for Australian women's writing and supporting strong female role models. We also want to celebrate women's contribution to Australian literature.?

NEW YORK (AP) ? NBC will hold a benefit concert Friday for victims of Hurricane Sandy featuring some artists native to the areas hardest hit.

Bruce Springsteen and Jon Bon Jovi, both famously from New Jersey, and Billy Joel, whose own Long Island was hard hit, are scheduled to appear at the concert, hosted by "Today" show co-host Matt Lauer.

Others taking part include Christina Aguilera, Sting, Jimmy Fallon, Jon Stewart, Kevin Bacon, Mary J. Blige, Tina Fey, James Gandolfini and Al Roker.

Bon Jovi was in London when the storm hit. He canceled his plans to be with his family and was returning to New Jersey on Thursday, according to his representative. In a statement, he urged people to donate to the victims of the storm and asked those affected to have hope, comparing the weather disaster to 9/11.

"Once again, the eyes of the world are upon us as we wake to the devastation of Hurricane Sandy. Once again we will have hurdles to clear and challenges we will have to face. When patience is lost ... when it seems helpless ... when you are in need and you feel as if you're alone ... know you are not alone," he wrote in a statement.

"We may not have electricity but we have power," he added.

ABC also announced a relief effort, designating Monday as a "Day of Giving" where shows like "Good Morning America," ''The View," ''World News with Diane Sawyer" and "Jimmy Kimmel Live" would be used as a vehicle to generate donations from viewers.

The NBC telecast will benefit the American Red Cross and will be shown on NBC and its cable stations including Bravo, CNBC, USA, MSNBC and E! Other networks were invited to join in, and HBO announced it will carry the event.

The concert will be simulcast on Bruce Springsteen's E Street Radio on SiriusXM.

Walt Disney Co. said Thursday it would donate $2 million to the American Red Cross and other rebuilding funds. Viacom Inc., the parent of "Jersey Shore" network MTV, said it would donate $1 million to relief and set up a $1 million employee matching gift program with the American Red Cross.

On Chelsea Handler's talk show "Chelsea Lately," guest John C. Reilly asked the studio audience to text a $10 donation to the Red Cross, and Handler responded by saying she would donate $100,000 in his name.

The sports world also has responded. The NFL and its players association joined together to donate $1 million to the Red Cross, while Green Bay Packers safety Charles Woodson announced a $100,000 donation, and the New York Yankees donated $500,000.

NASA rover finds clues to changes in Mars' atmosphere

ScienceDaily (Nov. 2, 2012) ? NASA's car-sized rover, Curiosity, has taken significant steps toward understanding how Mars may have lost much of its original atmosphere.

Learning what happened to the Martian atmosphere will help scientists assess whether the planet ever was habitable. The present atmosphere of Mars is 100 times thinner than Earth's.

A set of instruments aboard the rover has ingested and analyzed samples of the atmosphere collected near the "Rocknest" site in Gale Crater where the rover is stopped for research. Findings from the Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM) instruments suggest that loss of a fraction of the atmosphere, resulting from a physical process favoring retention of heavier isotopes of certain elements, has been a significant factor in the evolution of the planet. Isotopes are variants of the same element with different atomic weights.

Initial SAM results show an increase of five percent in heavier isotopes of carbon in the atmospheric carbon dioxide compared to estimates of the isotopic ratios present when Mars formed. These enriched ratios of heavier isotopes to lighter ones suggest the top of the atmosphere may have been lost to interplanetary space. Losses at the top of the atmosphere would deplete lighter isotopes. Isotopes of argon also show enrichment of the heavy isotope, matching previous estimates of atmosphere composition derived from studies of Martian meteorites on Earth.

Scientists theorize that in Mars' distant past its environment may have been quite different, with persistent water and a thicker atmosphere. NASA's Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution, or MAVEN, mission will investigate possible losses from the upper atmosphere when it arrives at Mars in 2014.

With these initial sniffs of Martian atmosphere, SAM also made the most sensitive measurements ever to search for methane gas on Mars. Preliminary results reveal little to no methane. Methane is of interest as a simple precursor chemical for life. On Earth, it can be produced by either biological or non-biological processes.

Methane has been difficult to detect from Earth or the current generation of Mars orbiters because the gas exists on Mars only in traces, if at all. The Tunable Laser Spectrometer (TLS) in SAM provides the first search conducted within the Martian atmosphere for this molecule. The initial SAM measurements place an upper limit of just a few parts methane per billion parts of Martian atmosphere, by volume, with enough uncertainty that the amount could be zero.

"Methane is clearly not an abundant gas at the Gale Crater site, if it is there at all. At this point in the mission we're just excited to be searching for it," said SAM TLS lead Chris Webster of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. "While we determine upper limits on low values, atmospheric variability in the Martian atmosphere could yet hold surprises for us."

In Curiosity's first three months on Mars, SAM has analyzed atmosphere samples with two laboratory methods. One is a mass spectrometer investigating the full range of atmospheric gases. The other, TLS, has focused on carbon dioxide and methane. During its two-year prime mission, the rover also will use an instrument called a gas chromatograph that separates and identifies gases. The instrument also will analyze samples of soil and rock, as well as more atmosphere samples.

"With these first atmospheric measurements we already can see the power of having a complex chemical laboratory like SAM on the surface of Mars," said SAM Principal Investigator Paul Mahaffy of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. "Both atmospheric and solid sample analyses are crucial for understanding Mars' habitability."

SAM is set to analyze its first solid sample in the coming weeks, beginning the search for organic compounds in the rocks and soils of Gale Crater. Analyzing water-bearing minerals and searching for and analyzing carbonates are high priorities for upcoming SAM solid sample analyses.

Researchers are using Curiosity's 10 instruments to investigate whether areas in Gale Crater ever offered environmental conditions favorable for microbial life. JPL, a division of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, manages the project for NASA's Science Mission Directorate, Washington, and built Curiosity. The SAM instrument was developed at Goddard with instrument contributions from Goddard, JPL and the University of Paris in France.

Food allergies can make kids targets for bullies - 8 News NOW

FRIDAY, Nov. 2 (HealthDay News) -- As the mother of a child with a severe peanut allergy, Nicole Smith was vigilant about reading labels and making sure teachers and school administrators understood that ingesting even a trace amount of peanuts could kill her son.

Dealing with the allergy was challenging -- and got more so when she heard an alarming story. When her son, Morgan, was in first grade, another student chased him around the playground with a peanut butter cracker, shouting, "I'm going to kill you!"

"We were shocked," recalled Nicole, whose son is now a 16-year-old high school junior in Colorado Springs, Colo. "We really weren't prepared that anyone would bully him for his food allergies."

Yet research shows that many kids with food allergies report being bullied or teased about the condition.

About 8 percent of U.S. children are allergic to at least one food, and many of them have multiple food allergies, studies show. The foods most likely to cause reactions in kids include peanuts, tree nuts (such as cashews and walnuts), milk, shellfish and eggs.

A 2010 survey of more than 350 parents of food-allergic kids found that 35 percent of children aged 5 and older were bullied, teased or harassed because of the food allergy, and 86 percent of those reported it happening more than once.

Most of the bullying occurred at school. Although nearly 80 percent of the bullying was done by classmates, more than 20 percent reported that adults, including teachers and school staff, were the perpetrators.

Chillingly, some of the bullying went beyond taunts and teasing, according to the survey. More than half -- 57 percent -- described physical events, such as being touched by an allergen, having an allergen thrown or waved at them, and even intentional contamination of their food with allergen, according to the survey, which was published in the Annals of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology.

"The one thing that makes food allergy different from bullying because of, say, obesity, is that in addition to the emotional and psychological distress, you run the risk of a physical harm if the allergen is indeed placed in food," said lead study author Dr. Jay Lieberman, assistant professor of allergy and immunology at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center and Le Bonheur Children's Hospital in Memphis.

Lieberman noted that the survey respondents did not report any allergic reaction due to intentionally contaminated food, presumably because the food-allergic kids saw it being done and didn't eat the food.

To what extent the teasing or bullying was malicious versus reflecting a lack of understanding about the severity of food allergies isn't known. But food-allergy experts say they've heard plenty of stories -- a child with a peanut allergy having peanut butter smeared on his backpack, or a child with a dairy allergy having milk sprayed at his face through a straw.

"A lot of kids and a lot of parents don't really get that this is life threatening," said Maria Acebal, CEO of the Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Network. "But we also see the most pernicious kind -- 'I know that this will harm you and I'm going to harm you.'"

There are several explanations for why having food allergies may make kids a target for teasing, experts say. Any time a child is "different" -- whether it's wearing glasses or not being able to eat the same foods as other kids -- other children can seize on that, Acebal said.

But societal attitudes also play a role, including a lack of awareness that something as seemingly innocuous as eating a cookie that has a trace of peanut in it can trigger a fatal reaction in some people, she added.

And food allergies are the butt of jokes on TV and in movies, she said.

"I think our society knows better than to say, 'Ha, ha, there goes the kid in the wheelchair.' People are sensitive to that. But we haven't gotten there yet with food allergies," she said.

To prevent bullying at school, teachers and principals need to make it clear that food allergies are no joke.

"Teachers and administrators would be horrified if they heard someone making fun of a child for diabetes or some other disability," Acebal said. "The same needs to happen for food allergies."

The incident involving Morgan Smith, who is also allergic to tree nuts, sesame, fish and shellfish, was taken seriously at his school. The boy who chased Morgan was suspended for the day. He never bullied Morgan again, and the two even later became friends.

"We were really lucky that it stopped when it did, and really lucky we had a principal that made that occur," Nicole Smith said.

According to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, warning signs that a child is being bullied can include depression or withdrawal; not wanting to go to school; changes in eating habits, sleep habits or weight loss; or bringing home a full lunchbox or not eating lunch at school.

Morgan urged other kids with food allergies to be assertive, and to speak up and tell parents and teachers if they're being teased or threatened.

"We already have a lot on our mind. I'm trying to deal with foods that could possibly kill me or make me really sick," Morgan said. "So when someone picked on me for trying to deal with that, it was really saddening. It makes it that much harder."

Antibacterial agents like nisin alter cell properties in bacteria to render it harmless. However, it's only recently that scientists began looking to antibacterial agents like nisin to see if they altered properties in other types of cells, such as cancer cells or cells in tumors.

Oral cancer is a leading cause of death worldwide, and oral squamous cell carcinoma accounts for more than 90 percent of oral cancers. However, survival rates for oral cancer haven't improved in decades, according to the study.

"The poor five-year survival rates for oral cancer underscore the need to find new therapies for oral cancer," Kapila said. "The use of small antibacterial agents, like nisin, to treat cancer is a new approach that holds great promise. Nisin is a perfect example of this potential because it has been used safely in humans for many years, and now the laboratory studies support its anti-tumor potential."

The U-M study, which looked at the use of antimicrobials to fight cancerous tumors, suggests nisin, in part, slows cell proliferation or causes cell death through the activation of a protein called CHAC1 in cancer cells, a protein known to influence cell death.

The study is the first to show CHAC1's new role in promoting cancer cell death under nisin treatment. The findings also suggest that nisin may work by creating pores in the cancer cell membranes that allow an influx of calcium. It's unclear what role calcium plays in nisin-triggered cell death, but it's well known that calcium is a key regulator in cell death and survival.

Additionally, the findings suggest that nisin slows or stops tumor growth by interrupting the cell cycle in "bad" cells but not the good cells; thus nisin stops cancer cell proliferation but doesn't hurt good cells.

DETROIT (AP) ? Officers have begun pulling over and questioning drivers in four Michigan counties in the hopes of catching a man suspected of shooting at other motorists nearly two dozen times over the past two weeks, including one driver who was wounded over the weekend.

Officers are searching for anything out of the norm during their traffic stops in Oakland, Livingston, Ingham and Shiawassee counties, where the suspect is believed to have fired on 22 other vehicles since Oct. 16, said Lt. Mike Shaw, of the state police post in Brighton.

Witnesses have described the suspect's vehicle as resembling a dark 1998 Oldsmobile Alero or a 1998 Toyota Camry. Police on Monday stopped the driver of a dark-colored Chevy Cavalier after a woman reported that something hit her car on U.S. 23 near Brighton.

Those initial descriptions may not be correct, Shaw told The Associated Press Tuesday.

"We've had 22 victims that have tried to identify a vehicle traveling at 60 to 70 mph," he said. "We're looking for more suspicious activities that go with four-door vehicles and those darker in color ? somebody that's pulled over on the side of a road or coming out of a wood line on the side of a freeway. Or if you see the same car driving around with no sense of purpose.

"We'd rather check that out and err on the side of caution."

Shaw didn't have any totals on the number of cars stopped, but said drivers "have been more than cooperative."

More than 100 local police, sheriff's deputies, state troopers and federal agents are involved in the investigation, which began with reported shootings in Wixom, about 25 miles northwest of Detroit.

A western Michigan man was shot in the buttocks Saturday while driving to Detroit along Interstate 96 in Livingston County. He is the only person wounded so far, but the suspect is believed to be shooting at people ? not just their vehicles, Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said Tuesday.

"It's been more of the grace of God than the guy intentionally missing people," Bouchard said. "We've had people who have been missed (by) inches. One bullet was lodged in a driver's seat."

The suspect is believed to be shooting at vehicles approaching from the opposite direction, Shaw said.

Some motorists didn't realize their vehicles had been hit until a quarter-mile or more later.

A task force put together to investigate the shootings has received more than 800 tips, including 200 that came in after the reward money for information that leads to an arrest was increased Monday from $12,000 to $102,000, Bouchard said.

Authorities say it's imperative that they catch the suspect not only to protect lives, but to stop the spread of fear affecting everyday life.

"For Halloween, we are going to do special patrols in each of our subdivisions so kids can have a normal Halloween," said Clarence Goodlein, Wixon's public safety director. "We're not going to be in the business of letting a thug and hoodlum bully us and change the course of our lives."
