Branca steals the show from Red Sox manager, ex-GM

Curtis Granderson, Ben Cherington, Bobby Valentine

By JIMMY GOLEN

updated 8:37 p.m. ET Jan. 30, 2012

BOSTON - Boston Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine and former GM Theo Epstein planned to talk a little baseball and raise a little money for charity.

Then Valentine's father-in-law, ex-big leaguer Ralph Branca, stole the show.

In a discussion about big markets and small markets and how players respond to being booed, Branca took the microphone and reminded the crowd that he knew a little bit about the topic. Branca gave up one of the most famous homers in baseball history, Bobby Thomson's three-run shot that gave the New York Giants the 1951 NL pennant over the Brooklyn Dodgers.

"Me get booed? Never," Branca told a few hundred people at Fenway Park on Monday night. "I did lose a few."

Then, alluding to the critically panned performance by Aerosmith lead singer Steven Tyler before the AFC championship game last week, Branca said he wants to sing the national anthem before Game 1 "when the Red Sox are in the World Series this year."

As his son-in-law threw up his hands in wonder, Branca then led the crowd in an impromptu singing of "God Bless America."

Branca spent most of his 12-year career in New York with the Dodgers, plus short stints with the Yankees and Detroit Tigers.

"I've been a Yankee and Met fan," he said, alluding to Valentine's time as Mets manager from 1996-2002. "I'm a Red Sox fan upside down, inside out, I'm part of Red Sox nation. God bless you all."

The event was planned as a fundraiser for Theo Epstein's charity, Foundation To Be Named Later. The "Hot Stove, Cool Music" roundtable and associated benefit concert has raised $300,000 this year and more than $4 million for local charities since their inception in 2000.

Also sitting in for the discussion were: Epstein, current Red Sox GM Ben Cherington, Pittsburgh Pirates GM Neal Huntington, New York Yankees center fielder Curtis Granderson and MLB network analyst Sean Casey, who played for five teams ? big market and small ? in a 12-year career.

Cherington said he is prepared to go to arbitration hearings with David Ortiz and Alfredo Aceves; the Red Sox did not have a single arbitration hearing in Epstein's tenure as GM. Ortiz has asked for $16.5 million and the team offered $12.65 million; Aceves was offered $950,000 and he asked for $1.6 million.

Valentine said he doesn't know how the shortstop situation will be resolved. The Red Sox traded Marco Scutaro to Colorado this month, leaving them with former utilitymen Mike Aviles and Nick Punto as potential replacements. Also in the mix is 22-year-old prospect Jose Iglesias, who spent most of last season at Triple-A.

Scutaro hit a career-high .299 last year. He was traded to the Rockies for right-hander Clayton Mortensen.

"I've never seen any of the guys play except for Punto a little on television. We've got seven weeks together, we'll practice together, we'll play together, that will all work itself out," Valentine said. "I think it's always good for guys to get a chance to work and think they have a chance to make the team so they work a little harder."

Granderson said he was pleased with the Yankees' offseason pitching acquisitions, including the trade with Seattle for All-Star right-hander Michael Pineda and the signing of free-agent righty Hiroki Kuroda from the Dodgers.

"It seemed like that was the big question as the season went on," Granderson said. "It looks like the front office addressed the issue. Now it looks like we have too much (pitching)."

But he isn't ready to pronounce the Yankees the winner of the offseason.

"I'd be very shocked and surprised if Boston doesn't make any more moves," he said.

Cain endorses Gingrich (Politico)

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. ? Herman Cain endorsed Newt Gingrich for president here on Saturday, injecting some energy into the campaign with two days to go until Florida?s primary.

The former presidential candidate and pizza executive called Gingrich the right person to address the ?crisis of leadership in the White House.?

?I hereby officially and enthusiastically endorse Newt Gingrich for president of the United States,? Cain told the cheering crowd here. ?Speaker Gingrich is a patriot. Speaker Gingrich is not afraid of bold ideas,? he said.

?And I also know that Speaker Gingrich is running for president and going through this sausage grinder ? I know what this sausage grinder is all about. I know he is going through this sausage grinder because he cares about the future of the United States of America.?

Gingrich thanked Cain and said he?d be a co-chairman of a commission on ?jobs, economic growth and taxes? should Gingrich become president. He promised that ?this little thing? known as Cain?s 9-9-9 tax plan would be part of the national conversation.

?This is a real job creator who?s actually managed a company,? Gingrich said of Cain. ?He?s going to be a great asset.?

Cain?s endorsement may not provide a major bounce for the former speaker. But it could infuse some energy into a campaign that?s now trailing Mitt Romney in Florida polls after a lackluster debate performance and scathing attack ads against Gingrich by Romney and his super PAC.

Since abandoning his own bid for the Republican nomination ? dogged by allegations of misconduct with women dating to his tenure at the helm of the National Restaurant Association ? Cain is still trying to influence the race.

On the day in December that he dropped out of the race, he announced the launch of a website to show ?the people are still in charge of this country? that would promote his tax plan and other issues he trumpeted during his presidential bid.

Cain had suggested that he would not endorse a presidential candidate, instead offering up an ?unconventional endorsement? of ?the people? who will decide the race.

At a keynote speech of the Southern Republican Leadership Conference, Cain said his endorsement was ?not a candidate seeking the nomination, not someone that?s running.?

?One of the comments that I got most often after I ended my quest for the position of president ? ?Mr. Cain, please keep 9-9-9 alive,?? he said. ?We will, with the 9-9-9 revolution.?

Most recently, Cain?s failed campaign bid became a cause for Comedy Central host Stephen Colbert, who explored a presidential bid as a way to lampoon the political process.

The two appeared at a Charleston, S.C. rally ? billed as the ?Rock Me Like a Herman Cain: South Cain-olina Primary Rally? ? together standing in front of a ?Vote Cain? banner, and Colbert called for the state?s voters to support Cain.

?Herman Cain is an outsider. In fact, he is such an outsider, he?s not even running for president anymore,? Colbert said.

While Cain is determined to play a role in the political process, he?s also a favorite media pundit, appearing on all the major cable networks and giving interviews to a number of print publications.

He will also return to WSB Radio, where he hosted a radio show for five years before leaving to run for president. Cain, according to the network, will provide commentary and political analysis weekdays, and appear as a guest on conservative Neil Boortz?s show.

He will also be an analyst for the station?s coverage of the Republican presidential primary.

TV and radio union approves merger plan with SAG (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? The board of directors of the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists has approved a proposed merger with the Screen Actors Guild, a day after SAG's board made the same move.

In a statement, AFTRA says 94 percent of its board voted for the merger Saturday at a videoconference meeting of board members in Los Angeles and New York.

Referendum ballots will now be sent out for a vote by members of both unions. AFTRA leaders say ballots will be mailed in late February and counted in late March.

The merger plan comes after two years of negotiations between the groups to join forces, hoping to gain more leverage in contract negotiations with producers.

AFTRA supported a SAG merger in 1998 and 2003, but the efforts failed.

Demi Moore 'Breakdown Isn't Surprising,' Expert Says

One celebrity watcher weighs in on the actress' latest personal woes.
By Jocelyn Vena

As more details about Demi Moore's recent hospitalization emerge, celebrity watchers are getting an inside look at the actress' personal life since her split with Ashton Kutcher in November. While some revelations may seem too personal, one expert told MTV News this sort of nothing's-off-limits coverage comes with the territory.

"When you're a celebrity, it's open season for the press to scrutinize every aspect of your life, specifically your personal life. Most celebrities are used to being under the microscope like this, but when the scrutiny involves their personal relationships, especially a split, everything is magnified," celebrity magazine editor David Caplan told MTV News on Friday, just as the 911 call from the night of her health scare hit the Web.

"The scrutiny, the press coverage ... can be very stressful for a celebrity, because the majority of the information being disseminated about the relationship and the split in the press is often highly critical of the celebrity," he added.

Photos: Demi Moore's career evolution.

When one bit of bad news — like a divorce or substance abuse — comes to light, the media has a field day trying to uncover even more dirt.

"As the press seeks to explain why the split occurred, skeletons in a stars' closet are revealed, and demons are revealed. In the case of Demi and Ashton, she was basically humiliated since it came to light that Ashton was blatantly cheating on Demi, with younger women, making Demi look like she was manipulated in the relationship — let alone reports claiming they had an open marriage," Caplan said. "Once this was revealed, the floodgates were open and stories emerged of Demi's alleged low self-esteem, how her partying put strain on the marriage and other aspects about her life. For someone who already seems to be on an emotional roller coaster, this doesn't bode well for Demi's mental health and well-being."

As the Demi story continues to hold the public's interest, expect the focus to also fall on her famous ex. "It's also exacerbated by the fact that Ashton seems to be going on with his life and enjoying himself," Caplan noted. "Combining all this together takes such a mental toll, a breakdown isn't surprising."

CNN en Espanol anchor to participate in Fla debate (omg!)

MIAMI (AP) ? CNN en Espa?ol is joining the list of Spanish-language networks to co-host debates and forums with the GOP presidential candidates.

On Thursday, CNN en Espanol's top anchor Juan Carlos Lopez will moderate questions from a panel in Miami during the CNN debate in Jacksonville. The debate is also co-hosted by the Hispanic Leadership Network and the Republican Party of Florida.

Last the fall, Telemundo anchor Jose Diaz-Balart asked questions related to immigration during an MSNBC debate, and he has since interviewed several of the candidates, including Newt Gingrich. On Wednesday Univision anchor Jorge Ramos went head-to-head in a series of "Meet the Candidate" interviews with Mitt Romney, Gingrich and Rick Santorum.

Lopez has collaborated with CNN, before, but Thursday's event will showcase his talents to a much broader, English-speaking audience.

Okla. hospital must pay $1M to Garth Brooks

Country singer Garth Brooks leaves a courtroom during a civil trial at the Rogers County Courthouse in Claremore, Okla. on Monday, Jan. 23, 2012. Brooks says an Oklahoma hospital pledged to name a women's center for his late mother in return for $500,000, but a deposition unveiled Monday showed that, after filing a lawsuit, the country singer couldn't remember what he had been promised. (AP Photo/Tulsa World, Matt Barnard)

(AP) ? An Oklahoma hospital that failed to build a women's health center in honor of Garth Brooks' late mother must pay the country singer $1 million, a jury has ruled.

Jurors on Tuesday evening ruled that the hospital must return Brooks' $500,000 donation plus pay him $500,000 in punitive damages. The decision came in Brooks' breach-of-contract lawsuit against Integris Canadian Valley Regional Hospital in Yukon. Brooks said he thought he'd reached a deal in 2005 with the hospital's president, James Moore, but sued after learning the hospital wanted to use the money for other construction projects.

Jury member Beverly Lacy said she voted in favor of Brooks because she thought the hospital went back on its word. As far as the punitive damages, she said: "We wanted to show them not to do that anymore to anyone else."

The hospital argued that Brooks gave it unrestricted access to the $500,000 donation and only later asked that it build a women's center and name it after his mother, Colleen Brooks, who died of cancer in 1999.

"Obviously we are disappointed, particularly with the jury's decision to award damages above and beyond the $500,000," Integris spokesman Hardy Watkins said. "We're just glad to see the case come to a resolution."

Brooks called the jurors "heroes" and said he felt vindicated by their verdict.

"I no longer feel like I'm crazy," he said.

During the trial, Brooks testified that he thought he had a solid agreement with Moore. Brooks said the hospital president initially suggested putting his mother's name on an intensive care unit, and when Brooks said that wouldn't fit her image, Moore suggested a women's center.

"I jumped all over it," Brooks told jurors in tearful testimony. "It's my mom. My mom was pregnant as a teenager. She had a rough start. She wanted to help every kid out there."

His attorney told the jury during closing arguments that Brooks kept his end of the agreement.

"This case is about promises: promises made and promises broken," lawyer John Hickey told jurors shortly before they started deliberating. "Mr. Brooks kept his promise. Integris never intended to keep their promise and never built a new women's center."

But hospital attorney Terry Thomas said Brooks' gift initially came in anonymously and unrestricted in 2005. He also noted that Brooks couldn't remember key details of negotiations with the hospital's president ? including what he'd been promised ? when questioned during a deposition after filing his lawsuit in 2009.

"At most, it was a misunderstanding between these two," Thomas told jurors during his closing argument. "Am I calling Mr. Brooks a liar? Absolutely not. It's perfectly understandable that he does not remember these events."

The jury began deliberating Tuesday afternoon in Rogers County District Court, and the judge told jurors she wanted them to work as late as midnight to come to a decision.

Before the verdict was read, Brooks said the day had been emotional. The country music star said he was simply trying to honor his mother.

"This little pistol, she deserves nothing but good," Brooks said.

As Egypt's new parliament convenes, eyes on ultraconservative salafis

Salafis want to roll back the clock to their vision of sixth-century Islam. They captured a quarter of the votes, far more than many expected.?

As Egypt's new parliament holds its first session today, the Muslim Brotherhood took its seat at the head of the table, with a parliamentary plurality after decades of being hounded by the Egyptian security state.?

But what's really interesting ? or alarming, depending on your perspective ? is the faction playing second fiddle: Nearly one quarter of the new representatives will come from the ultraconservative salafi movement that follows a strict interpretation of Islam like what is practiced in Saudi Arabia.

The official results from nearly two months of staggered voting, released Saturday, show that an alliance of salafis led by the Nour Party won about 25 percent of the seats. The alliance led by the Muslim Brotherhood?s Freedom and Justice Party took about 47 percent, meaning that Islamist parties will make up about 70 percent of the first parliament since the fall of former President Hosni Mubarak.

While the strong showing of the Freedom and Justice Party was expected, few had predicted that parties following a stricter interpretation of Islam would capture so many votes. Now the spotlight will be on the Nour Party as Egyptians wait to see how it will handle its new power.

Will it push to implement Islamic law, banning alcohol sales and regulating women's dress, as some fear? (both are actions that could harm tourism, a major industry for Egypt.) Or will it focus on issues like improving Egypt?s poor social services and propping up the faltering economy? The party has pledged to do both, depending on who was listening. While often playing up the rhetoric of social conservatism to its supporters, party officials are careful to present a moderate agenda to a Western audience.

In an interview, spokesman Mohamed Nour said his party would focus on bringing political stability and security to Egypt, and balancing the powers of the legislative, presidential, and judicial branches of government, after decades in which authority was concentrated in the presidency.

But Omar Ashour, an expert on Islamist movements at the University of Exeter, says it is likely the party will lean toward a socially conservative agenda. ?They will want to maintain their credibility in front of their audience,? he says. ?They want to reflect the idea of upholding the [Islamic] identity of Egypt and upholding the promises that they made. This is easier than trying to monitor or control the security services or trying to push the military out of politics.?

Nour isn?t the only party in parliament formed by salafis, or Muslims who believe in practicing Islam as close to possible as it was practiced in the first generations after the prophet Muhammad. That means enforcing strict gender segregation, forbidding alcohol, and generally supporting the application of sharia, or Islamic law. But Nour far outpaced the other salafi parties in the elections because, like the Muslim Brotherhood?s party, it was born out of an organization with a large following in Egyptian society.

That organization is the Salafist Call, which was formed in the 1970?s on an Alexandria university campus as a rival to the Muslim Brotherhood. Like the Brotherhood, it has a long history of providing social services to Egyptians in need ? like running orphanages and schools. Though salafist groups have never participated in elections before, that grassroots organization and following helped it surprise many liberals with such a large percentage of the vote. Mr. Nour dismisses such surprise, saying that in better conditions, the party would have won more seats.?

10 best resorts that get you close to animals

Atlantis / AP

Guests at the Atlantis hotel swim on Paradise Island, Bahamas. The resort features one of the largest outdoor marine habitats in the world, one that showcases more than 50,000 aquatic animals representing 250 species.

By Candyce H. Stapen, Family Vacation Critic

For animal-loving families, the highlight of any vacation is a close -- but fun -- encounter with a critter. At these 10 resorts, located in the U.S., Caribbean, Central America and Africa, families meet regional animals, learn about their behaviors and habitats and even, in some cases, interact with them.

1. Atlantis, Paradise Island, Bahamas
This mega-resort on the Bahamas' Paradise Island is loosely themed on Atlantis, the lost city under the sea. As a result, water is everywhere, tying together the vast property with its many buildings housing over 3,400 guest accommodations. Along with multiple pools and man-made lagoons, Atlantis features one of the largest outdoor marine habitats in the world, one that showcases more than 50,000 aquatic animals representing 250 species. Walk through a shark tunnel and watch the fierce critters zig-zag above your head. Ogle tanks of jelly fish, lobsters and piranhas and be mesmerized by colorful schools of parrot, butterfly and other tropical fish. Watch nurse sharks in the Reef Lagoon, sea turtles in the Hibiscus Lagoon and Southern stingrays in the Stingray Lagoon.

Aquaventure features more water rides as well as the 14-acre Dolphin Cay where you learn about, touch and swim with dolphins. During the six-hour Trainer for a Day program, kids help train the curious critters and assist a laboratory technician at the Dolphin Cay veterinary hospital. The summer's Marine Adventure Fantasy Camp, held at select times, allows 'tweens and teens a multi-day experience of prepping food and feeding the animals, as well as taking a guided shark walk and snorkel trip.

2. Four Seasons Resort at Jackson Hole, Wyo.
The West's panoramic vistas of snow-capped mountain peaks set against blue skies define the legendary landscape of a Wyoming vacation. But that's just the background. To really explore the west, you need to view the region's animals, a special treat for city slicker families.

On a custom, four-hour wildlife safari led by a naturalist and offered year-round by the Four Seasons Resort at Jackson Hole, you ride in an SUV equipped with Swarovski spotting scopes and binoculars. As you traverse such area must-sees as the Grand Teton National Park, the Bridger Teton National Forest and the National Elk Refuge, your guide talks about the region's history and geology while everyone searches the fields, woods, mountainsides and rivers for bison, bears, elk, moose, bighorn sheep, bald eagles otters and trumpeter swans. Kids can use the items in the adventure pack they receive for the outing to collect animal skulls, claws and scat.

You might also spot wildlife while skiing and snowboarding in winter or hiking the parks in spring and summer. Located in Wyoming's Teton Mountains, the Four Season Resort at Jackson Hole offers upmarket accommodations in 106 guest rooms, 18 suites and 32 private residences.

3. Gunflint Lodge, Grand Marais, Minn.
Gunflint Lodge, situated lakefront in Minnesota's North Woods, lures families from mid-December to mid-March with dog sledding. Sit in the sled bundled in blankets as the willing team of huskies and Malamute mixes pulls you through a fairytale setting of frozen lakes and snowy trails edged by icicle-laced pine trees. During special dog mushing weekends -- January 12 to 16, February 8 to 12 and March 1 to 4, 2012 -- enjoy longer outings and hands-on time learning how to harness, handle and command the eager canines. Winter also brings naturalist-led wolf howlings: you howl in hopes the crafty critters howl back.

When not dog-sledding, try ice fishing as well as cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Sprinkle the free corn kernels outside your cabin and in the early evening watch the deer that come to munch the treats. In summer, Gunflint morphs into a mecca for paddlers exploring the adjacent Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. As you glide across the lakes, keep a look-out for moose, beavers, otters and loons.

Gunflint Lodge offers 23 one- to four-bedroom cabins. With simple, but comfortable early American style beds and bureaus, and pine paneling and fireplaces, the accommodations exude a woodsy feel. However, don't confuse "simple" with "rustic." Most units come with full kitchens, washer/dryers, multiple bathrooms and saunas. Cook in or dine out at the lodge's two restaurants.

4. Half Moon Resort, Jamaica
The Half Moon Resort, one of Jamaica's long-time luxury leaders, sprawls on 400 acres that feature flower gardens, lush lawns, stables, tennis courts, a spa, an 18-hole golf course, scores of pools and two miles of beach. With so much land the resort hardly ever feels crowded. This is true for the property's dolphin encounters as well. One of the few Caribbean resorts to feature an onsite dolphin lagoon, Half Moon offers a dolphin experience for guests only. So instead of lining up with scores of cruise passengers crowding around a dock, you'll enjoy a small group or a personalized encounter. Little kids learn about the dolphins and touch their rubbery skin at a shallow water beach encounter. During a deep water or swim encounter, older kids, adults and families get more time to go nose to bottlenose with Reggae, the male dolphin, and Toni, the female. For even more time with these intelligent and friendly critters, 'tweens, teens and adults can serve as trainers for a day.

The AAA Four Diamond property joined the RockResorts collection in January 2011. With no high-rise buildings, the rooms spread out in clusters. Standard accommodation options include hotel rooms and one- to two-bedroom suites, or you can rent a five- to seven-bedroom villa.

5. Because & Beyond's Klein's Camp, Tanzania
A safari is the ultimate animal lover's dream. Watching a giraffe move languidly across a grassy plain, a herd of elephants munch tree branches, or a dazzle of zebra trot into the sunset are images you and your kids will remember forever. Because & Beyond's Klein's Camp is private. Rangers are allowed to drive off road and take guests out on night outings, two things that maximize your animal encounters. At night you can more easily spot certain animals such as leopards. At Klein's Camp, if the ranger sees a leopard slinking through the tall grass stalking an impala, he may drive the Land Cruiser off the dirt trail to follow her; the infrared lights on the vehicle allow the guests to track the leopard without disturbing her hunt.

Klein's Camp, comprised of a series of round buildings perched on a high ridge, affords a sweeping view of Tanzania's northeastern Serengeti. Often you can see giraffe, wildebeest and elephants from the main lounge or from a chair on your patio. Kids receive special packs with wildlife information, and the rangers show kids how the locals make fire by rubbing sticks together as well as how to identify an animal by his or her droppings and foot prints.

6. Tortuga Lodge, Costa Rica
Getting to Tortuga Lodge, accessible only by small plane or boat, is itself an adventure. Take the boat ride one way so you can enjoy the wind-in-your-hair feel of the waterways and spot monkeys, sloths and herons along the way. Tortuga Lodge, located on Costa Rica's northwest Caribbean coast, occupies 146 acres of land within the Tortuguero Conservation Area, a region of canals and slow-moving rivers that reaches to the sea and contains the 51,000-acre Tortuguero National Park. From the lodge's 26 rooms and penthouse suite, you often wake to the guttural calls of the howler monkeys scrambling in the branches overhead. On canal boat tours see turtles, lizards, river otters, toucans, parrots and other animals.

From July to October, you can go turtle-watching on Tortuguero Beach, part of the national park and an important nesting site for the endangered Atlantic green sea turtles. You will long remember the age-old ritual of a 300-pound Atlantic green sea turtle lumbering ashore, digging a nest, laying her eggs and then slowly returning to the water.

7. J.W. Marriott Ihilani Resort, Oahu, Hawaii
Feed and find out about Hawaii's stingrays, sharks and other marine wildlife at the J.W. Marriott Ihilani Resort during naturalist-led sessions in the property's onsite saltwater ponds and lagoons. At the Reef Shark Feeding, learn about lifecycles, habitats, and identifying factors of the day's star predators, such toothy critters as scalloped hammerhead sharks from Kaneohe Bay, Oahu; gray reef sharks from Molokini, Maui; or iridescent black-tip sharks from reefs near Pearl Harbor, Oahu. The Ray Experience gets you in the water with Hawaiian rays and spotted eagle rays, graceful swimmers that get close enough to brush up against your legs. During the Reef Safari, the guide leads you on a show-and-tell walk through one of the resort's shallow lagoons, letting you touch the "resident" sea cucumbers, sea stars, tiger cowry shells, strawberry crabs, sea hares and maybe even an octopus. The resort, located on the island of Oahu, also offers special versions of the shark feeding and reef safari for children ages 4-10.

An AAA Four Diamond property, the 315-room J. W. Marriott Ihilani Resort is part of the Ko Olina resort area located about 17-miles west of the Honolulu airport. The upscale resort features two pools, three restaurants, a spa and a golf course.

8. Occidental Grand Xcaret, Riviera Maya, Mexico
Scarlet macaws, flamingoes, white-tailed deer and parrots, are some of the animals that live at the Occidental Grand Xcaret, a 769-room, all-inclusive resort in the Riviera Maya. The animals make strolling the grounds fun, especially when a parrot greets you with a chirpy "Hola!" To see more Caribbean critters go to popular Xcaret, an eco-adventure park adjacent to the resort. The Occidental Grand has its own entrance to Xcaret and the hotel frequently offers discounted park admission.

At Xcaret, get close to sea turtles, meet tapirs, view bats in a cave, admire jaguars and pumas, see manatees and swim with dolphins or sharks, where you'll get an underwater view of a reef with Sea Trek or Snuba (neither of which requires diving certification).

With Xcaret next door, it's easy to come back to the hotel for an afternoon swim and then return to Xcaret for the evening demonstration of Pok-Ta-Pok, the ancient Mesoamerican ball game, and the entertaining folkloric show. For more luxury, book a room at the Occidental Grand Xcaret's Royal Club, which has a separate dining room with better food for dinner.

9. South Seas Island Resort, Captiva Island, Fla.
Discover Florida's sea creatures during a vacation at South Seas Island Resort, Captiva Island. On beach walks, especially along Sunset Beach and South Beach, known for the thousands of shells brought in with the waves, imagine the critters that once inhabited these shells while collecting your own beach souvenirs. On Captiva Island, several easy eco-adventure outings bring you close to wildlife. For more shelling and bird watching, cruise to nearby Cayo Costa Beach, a part of Florida's state park system. On a 90-minute boat cruise through Pine Island Sound, you're likely to spot dolphins arcing through the water "riding" the boat's waves.

Dedicated to marine conservation, the Sanibel Sea School, located at the South Seas Island Resort, offers a variety of hands-on workshops for children, teens, adults and families. The programs range in length of time from 30 minutes to all day. At the one-and-a-half-hour "Creature Feature," kids focus on one sea animal. Budding marine biologists ages 6 to 13, teens and adults can select from more than 30 courses focusing on fiddler crabs, frigate birds, fish, dolphins, mangroves, manatees and more. During the workshops, you'll spend most of the time in the field snorkeling, seining, canoeing and examining finds. Families can also opt for a private session on a topic of their choice. The 330-acre resort, which includes a wildlife refuge, offers a variety of accommodations from hotels to two- and three-bedroom condominiums and homes.

10. Robert's Beach Resort, Placencia, Belize
Reefs, rivers and rainforests abound in Belize, a haven for eco-adventures. Robert's Beach Resort, formerly the Inn at Robert's Grove, is situated in Placencia on Belize's southern peninsula. From there, day trips take you to Maya ruins, where you'll see rainforests as well as many of the spectacular reefs that are part of Belize's portion of the second longest barrier reef system in the world. The resort's top-rated PADI dive center arranges both scuba and snorkel outings. On a snorkel outing to Laughing Bird Cave, you'll float above schools of rainbow colored fish and get close to a big sea turtle who languidly surfaces nearby. For a special family getaway, stay overnight at Robert's Caye, the resort's one-acre island, where sea stars and tropical fish are steps away from your beachside hammock.

Robert's Beach Resort stretches on 22 acres from the sea to the lagoon, a large estuary of mangrove-lined channels and wide bays. On boat trips through the lagoon to Monkey River, known for its troop of howlers, you're likely to see egrets, dolphins and even a manatee. In Placencia, choose from hotel rooms as well as one- to three-bedroom units, a few of which have kitchenettes. Robert's Grove Beach Resort won Tripadvisor's Traveller's Choice Award in 2010 as well as Tripadvisor's Certificate of Excellence in 2011.

No decision yet on Gaddafi son's trial: ICC (Reuters)

THE HAGUE/TRIPOLI (Reuters) ? The International Criminal Court said on Monday it has not decided whether Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, son of the overthrown Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, should be tried in Libya, contradicting earlier comments by a Libyan minister.

Libya and the international war crimes court appear to be at loggerheads over where Saif al-Islam's trial should take place.

Depending on the outcome, Gaddafi's most prominent son could either face the death penalty in his home country, or the prospect of awaiting trial in a comfortable detention centre known as "The Hague Hilton" in the Netherlands, with no risk of capital punishment.

The ICC issued an arrest warrant for Saif al-Islam last year after prosecutors accused him and others of involvement in the killing of protesters during the revolt that eventually toppled his father in August.

But when militia fighters captured Saif al-Islam in November, Libya said it wanted to try him at home.

The ICC has given Libya a January 23 deadline to confirm whether and when it would surrender Saif al-Islam and to give information about his mental and physical health. It also asked Libya to answer concerns, raised by activists, that Saif al-Islam was being held incommunicado, without access to lawyers.

ICC spokesman Fadi El-Abdallah said that the court had received information on Monday from Libya but declined to give details, saying it was confidential.

He added that the judges had not made a decision on whether Saif al-Islam could be tried in Libya, contradicting comments by Libya's minister of justice.

"Libya applied on Friday to the ICC for Saif to be tried in a Libyan court. The ICC accepted," Minister of Justice Ali Humaida Ashour told Reuters on Monday, adding that an investigation into Saif had yet to finish but his trial date would be announced when it had been completed.

PCE in drinking water linked to an increased risk of mental illness

Friday, January 20, 2012

The solvent tetrachloroethylene (PCE) widely used in industry and to dry clean clothes is a neurotoxin known to cause mood changes, anxiety, and depression in people who work with it. To date the long-term effect of this chemical on children exposed to PCE has been less clear, although there is some evidence that children of people who work in the dry cleaning industry have an increased risk of schizophrenia. New research published in BioMed Central's open access journal Environmental Health found that exposure to PCE as a child was associated with an increased risk of bipolar disorder and post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

From 1968, until the early 1980s, water companies in Massachusetts installed vinyl-lined (VL/AC) water pipes that were subsequently found to be leaching PCE into the drinking water supply. Researchers from Boston University followed the incidence of mental illness amongst adults from Cape Cod, born between 1969 and 1983, who were consequently exposed to PCE both before birth and during early childhood.

While there was no increase seen in the incidence of depression, regardless of PCE exposure, people with prenatal and early childhood exposure to PCE had almost twice the risk of bipolar disorder, compared to an unexposed group, and their risk of PTSD was raised by 50%.

Dr Ann Aschengrau from Boston University School of Public Health warned, "It is impossible to calculate the exact amount of PCE these people were exposed to - levels of PCE were recorded as high as 1,550 times the currently recommended safe limit. While the water companies flushed the pipes to address this problem, people are still being exposed to PCE in the dry cleaning and textile industries, and from consumer products, and so the potential for an increased risk of illness remains real."

Eye-Fi CEO slams SD Association's eerily similar Wireless SD card standard, says his IP is being violated

Yuval Koren is not pleased. For those unaware, he's the CEO of Eye-Fi, the company that has practically written the rules on embedding WiFi into SD cards. If you blinked last week, you probably missed the SD Association's announcement that it had created a new Wireless LAN SD standard that would effectively give just about anyone the ability to add Eye-Fi abilities to their SD cards. As it turns out, Eye-Fi's none too pleased about it, and Koren has gone so far as to publicly admit that the standard is seriously infringing upon highly valuable Eye-Fi technology. To quote: "As [the SDA's standard is] currently written, essential Eye-Fi patented technology would be violated by anyone implementing this draft specification." Bold.

He goes on to explain that his company has invested "tens of millions of dollars and several years to create unique technology that lets people wirelessly transfer photos and videos directly from their camera and mobile devices," and calls the SDA protocol "flat out misrepresentation." He's effectively calling for the SD Association to either pony up and license Eye-Fi's tech, or scrap the "standard" and rewrite it using something else altogether. The full letter is posted up after the break, with absolutely no elation to be found.

20 homes burn as high winds fuel blaze near Reno

A raging wildfire burning near Reno, Nev., has forced thousands of people from their homes and is blamed for at least one death. NBC's Miguel Almaguer reports.

?

By NBC News, msnbc.com staff and news services

Updated at 5:12 a.m. ET: Firefighters worked early Friday to hold the line on a fast-moving brush fire that tore through the Reno area, destroying more than 20 homes and forcing thousands of residents to flee.

The blaze started shortly after noon Thursday and, fueled by wind gusts reaching 82 mph, mushroomed to more than 6 square miles in size before firefighters stopped its surge toward Reno.

About 2,000?people remained under evacuation orders late Thursday, Reno Fire Chief Michael Hernandez said. About 250 firefighters were battling the blaze.

Wet weather was forecast Friday, and snow was forecast Friday night. But high winds were expected to continue, with gusts up to 40 mph.

About 2,300 homes in the area were without power Thursday night.

Updated 1:10 a.m. ET: More than 10,000 people have been evacuated as a wind-driven wildfire burns out of control near Reno, The Associated Press reports. Reno Fire Chief Michael Hernandez said hundreds of firefighters were "in the thick of battle" against a blaze that has burned across thousands of acres.

"The news is not good," Hernandez said. Wind gusts of up to 82 mph were reported and a five-mile stretch of U.S. Highway 395 was closed.

Hernandez confirmed one death, but would not say it was caused by the fire until an autopsy is performed, KRNV.com reported.

Gov. Brian Sandoval has declared a state of emergency.

At a press conference Thursday afternoon, fire officials said that?the brush fire began around noon just north of Washoe Lake and that the cause was under investigation.

Original post: RENO, Nev. -- Fierce winds fueled a fast-moving brush fire through a valley south of Reno on Thursday, destroying at least 10 homes and threatening many more along a stretch of U.S.?395.?

At least 10 homes burned in the Washoe Area Estates?neighborhood, NBC station KRNV of Reno reported. Washoe County declared a state of emergency.

Heavy smoke forced authorities to shutdown?a five-mile stretch of the highway north of Washoe Lake in Pleasant Valley, about 10 miles from Reno, the Reno Gazette-Journal reported.

James Glover Ii / Reuters

A crew member from the Nevada Department of Forestry works to control the Washoe Drive fire near a home off Highway 395 in Washoe City, Nev., on Thursday.

Authorities evacuated hundreds of children from Pleasant Valley Elementary School and residents of neighboring Washoe City.

Sheriff's deputies told the?Reno newspaper?winds?were pushing flames closer to Reno, where voluntary evacuations were issued in several neighborhoods.

Vice President Joe Biden's visit to Reno -- already delayed because of bad weather?-- was cut short because of the fire.?Biden was two hours late to give a speech to students?at Galena High School. The vice president was forced to end his speech?after 25 minutes because officials needed the high school gym as a command center for firefighters.

Winds in the area were gusting over?50 mph, The Weather Channel reported, but were expected to moderate on Friday to about 20 mph, with gusts to about 30 mph.

Winds gusts?up to 82 mph were reported within a few miles of the fire, and a gust of 122 mph was recorded atop Slide Mountain, which is between the fire and Reno at the Mount Rose ski resort.

Rounding up horses
Flames up to 40 feet high raced through sagebrush, grass and pines in an area where small neighborhoods are dispersed in a rural landscape. Washoe County animal services officials were helping round up horses and other livestock for evacuation.

NBC News

A large home is destroyed by flames near Reno on Thursday.

About six flights?were diverted, delayed or canceled at the Reno-Tahoe International Airport as a reult of heavy black smokein Washoe Valley, said spokesman Brian Kulpin.

The conditions were similar to those Nov. 18, when a wind-driven fire destroyed 30 homes in southwest Reno.

How to search the R-sig-finance archives | (R news & tutorials)

A not unusual part of a response on the R-sig-finance mailing list is:

?Search the list archives.?

In principle that makes sense.? In practice it might not be clear what to do.? Now it should be.

The list

The R-sig-finance mailing list deals with the intersection of questions about the R language and finance.? It can be of interest to finance people who don?t use R.

You can subscribe via https://www.stat.math.ethz.ch/mailman/listinfo/R-SIG-Finance/

You need to be subscribed in order to post to the list.

You can see the archives of the list at https://stat.ethz.ch/pipermail/r-sig-finance/ but I doubt that is an effective route to searching the archives.

Search method J

As in Josh.

  • Go to Rseek
  • Put in your search term
  • select ?Support Lists? (near top right)

The search we want to do (of course) is for ?Lao Tzu?.? The method works wonderfully for this.

Search method B

As in Brian.

  • Use the search engine of your choice
  • Start with the list name, then your target search

For example, search:

r-sig-finance Lao Tzu

The order can matter, and Brian asserts that putting the list name first gives better results.

Search method D

As in Dirk.

Hey, I have it all memorized, why would I need to search?

Questions

What other strategies are there for searching the archives?

Osborne discussed how Japan, UK can work with IMF on Europe

TOKYO | Wed Jan 18, 2012 7:38am GMT

TOKYO (Reuters) - Chancellor George Osborne said on Wednesday he discussed with Japanese officials how Britain and Japan can work with Group of 20 countries and the International Monetary Fund to deal with Europe's sovereign debt crisis.

Osborne, who spoke after separate meetings with Japan's prime minister and finance minister, did not give details of their discussions on the issue.

Financial markets are on edge as mass ratings downgrades in Europe and pressure on Greece to secure a deal with its creditors over reduced interest payments on its debt threaten to worsen Europe's sovereign debt crisis and harm the global economy.

"We talked about the global economic situation and how Japan and Britain can work together through the G20 and the IMF in helping reduce the instability in the world," Osborne told reporters.

"We talked specifically about the euro zone crisis and what we need to see from euro zone countries in dealing with that crisis."

Osborne is visiting China and Japan this week in a drive to attract Asian investment and to lessen Britain's dependence on trade with the crisis-hit euro zone.

He said he talked with the Japanese ministers about Iran's nuclear ambitions and they agreed Iran should not have nuclear weapons.

Osborne also agreed with his Japanese counterpart Jun Azumi to seek ways to provide more resources to the IMF, depending on Europe's own efforts, a Japanese finance ministry official said.

The ministers also shared concern about the potential negative impact of the U.S. Volcker Rule on the global economy and financial markets, the official said.

The U.S. could reinforce sanctions against Iran by using the Volcker rule, which limits banks' trading, against firms that fail to comply. Tokyo is worried it could make trading in Japanese government bonds less attractive and profitable.

The two sides did not discuss currency issues, the official said. Japan has intervened in the currency market to sell the yen so as to protect its exporters, a potential source of friction with other governments who do not approve of such action.

U.S. rating agency Standard & Poor's cut its credit rating of the euro zone's EFSF rescue fund on Monday, following a mass downgrades three days earlier to nine of the 17 euro zone members, saying policymakers have not done enough to curb the two-year old sovereign debt crisis. Britain is outside the euro zone and maintains its top credit rating.

Greece risks going bankrupt when 14.5 billion euros (12 billion pounds) of bond redemptions fall due in late March. Without a private-sector bond swap involving a voluntary writedown, a 130 billion euro second international bailout for Greece could fall apart.

Japan official wary of Iran sanctions impact (AP)

TOKYO ? Japan's finance minister expressed concern Wednesday about the effectiveness of U.S. sanctions on Iran and their potential impact on Japanese banks.

Jun Azumi's comments came as a delegation U.S. government officials began talks with Japanese counterparts about the sanctions targeting Iran's oil industry in a bid to thwart what Western governments say is an effort to develop nuclear weapons.

Japan has given mixed signals on the sanctions. Azumi declared last week that Japan would move quickly to reduce its oil imports from Iran after meeting with Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, but other officials including the prime minister have said economic implications need to be considered.

Azumi also struck a more cautious tone Wednesday, telling journalists at the Foreign Correspondents' Club of Japan that if the sanctions were imposed immediately, they could sustain "tremendous" damage to Japanese banks. The sanctions would bar financial institutions from the American market if they do business with Iran's central bank.

"We want to take steps to keep the damage to the Japanese economy to a minimum," Azumi said.

Japan imports about 9 percent of its oil from Iran and has been steadily reducing that percentage in recent years. Analysts say Japan will likely turn to other major oil suppliers to offset any further declines from Iran.

Azumi said he understood the potential danger of Iran's nuclear program, but also acknowledged "there were some concerns" that the sanctions would not be effective in convincing Iranian authorities.

He added that "Russia and China hold the keys to resolving this situation."

China, the world's biggest energy consumer, remains unwilling to back an oil embargo against Iran. South Korea also has remained non-committal.

Visiting U.S. officials met with Japanese counterparts for about 90 minutes Wednesday to discuss how the sanctions might be implemented.

"It was clear that we share an interest in preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons," said Robert Einhorn, the State Department's special advisor on nonproliferation and arms control.

Einhorn said the two sides also shared the importance of a "dual-track" strategy in dealing with Iran involving both pressure and engagement.

Earlier in the day, Azumi met with U.K. Chancellor of Exchequer George Osborne to discuss trade, Iran and other matters. Osbourne told reporers that the British government appreciated that it is not easy for Japan to switch nearly one tenth of its oil supplies quickly.

But he said the two countries agreed it is not acceptable for Iran to continue to develop a nuclear weapon and that "we are prepared to use the tools available to us in the international community to stop that happening."

Tehran says its nuclear program is for civilian energy use and scientific research.

Psychology textbooks have made the same historical mistake over and over. Now the inaccuracy is pointed out in a new article published in Perspectives on Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science.

For generations, social psychology students have read that Norman Triplett did the first social psychology experiment in 1889, when he found that children reeled in a fishing line faster when they were in the presence of another child than when they were alone.

But almost everything about that sentence is wrong. The new paper's author, Wolfgang Stroebe of Utrecht University in the Netherlands, had recently published a handbook on the history of social psychology (with Aria W. Kruglanski) when he came across a 2005 reanalysis of Triplett's data and dug farther.

It turned out that the children in the study were turning a reel, but not reeling in a fishing line, and that Triplett was studying whether children performed better with competition. For his study, he eyeballed the dataan acceptable scientific practice in the 19th centuryand decided that some children performed better when competing, some performed worse, and others were not affected. The 2005 analysis found that these results were not statistically significant by modern standards.

So the modern textbooks have the details of the study wrong. But they're also wrong that Triplett was the first psychologist to look at how people are affected by each other.

In the 1880s, Max Ringelmann studied whether workers pulled harder when they were together than when they worked alone. In 1894, Binet and Henri published a study of social influence among children and in 1887, Charles Fr authored a book that described experiments on how the presence of others could increase individual performance. But the field didn't find its modern identity until 1924, says Stroebe, when Floyd Allport published a textbook defining social psychology as the experimental study of social behavior.

"I think the more interesting fact is that in the 1890s so many authors tried to answer questions relevant to social psychology with experimental methods," Stroebe says. "This is much more important than to figure out who was really the first author."

It's time to fix the textbooks, Stroebe says. "I especially tried to get the article into a major journal in the hope that authors will take more notice of it than of articles published in historical journals." He thinks his paper is important even though it isn't at the cutting edge of research. "I was trained many decades ago in a period where one would have considered correcting the history of the origin of an important subfield of psychology to be important," Stroebe writes in the conclusion of his article. "We even had a word for it. We called it scholarship."
