Venus, Jupiter, and Mercury to align in the late sky
The two brightest planets, Jupiter and Venus are projected to crowd the sky this weekend with their paler cousin, Mercury, along with a bonus crescent moon.
If the weather is clear this weekend, even those who normally do not look at the sky may be struck by a dazzling celestial scene in the west after sunset: a view of two bright planets and an even more eye-catching crescent moon.?
Skip to next paragraphThe two brightest planets, Venus and Jupiter, will accentuate the beauty of the slender crescent moon on Saturday and Sunday (Feb. 25 and 26). The planet Mercury may also be visible too, low on the horizon, beneath Venus depending on your sky conditions, but it will disappear quickly after sunset. ?
Even if your local weather brings clouds or rain, you can still watch Venus, Jupiter and the moon align online via online broadcasts.
Venus, the "Queen of the Sky," can put on a show all by itself, at times far outshining any other object in the night sky except for the moon. It's so bright that you can even glimpse it in the daytime ? if you know exactly where to look.
The sky maps of Jupiter and Venus for this story show how the planets and the moon will appear together on Saturday and Sunday. Astronomers call this cosmic arrangement a triple conjunction.
Early Saturday afternoon, if your sky is clear and blue, try locating the crescent moon at around 1 p.m. local time. It will be roughly two-thirds up from the southeast horizon to the point directly overhead.?
If you find it, look a short distance directly below it to find Venus. The planet should appear as a tiny white speck against the blue daytime sky. At dusk, the pair will make for a beautiful sight, with Venus hovering below and to the moon's left, while much higher above and to the left of this dynamic duo will be Jupiter. On Sunday evening, the moon will have moved up, almost to where Jupiter is, sitting off to the lower right of the bright gas giant planet.
Another planet is also gracing the night sky in addition to Venus, Jupiter and Mercury: Mars. The Red Planet is currently rising in the eastern sky a few hours after sunset.
This weekend's dazzling skywatching show is a good occasion to reflect on the astronomical history associated with Earth's moon.
It has been said that the calendar is humanity's first scientific invention and the moon has played an important role in this regard. Calendars, such as the ones used in the Jewish and Muslim faiths, have lunar months that begin on the evening when the crescent moon first appears in the western sky at sundown. ?
For instance, the moon's so-called "Knife of Time" hung low in the western twilight sky on Thursday (Feb. 23), heralding the opening of Adar, the sixth month of the year 5772 in the Jewish Calendar. This arresting classification of the young crescent moon aptly characterizes how the moon's phases and cycle seemingly cut the year into convenient segments. [Infographic: Moon Phases & Lunar Cycle]
Astronomers define the "new moon" as that moment when the moon occupies the same ecliptic longitude as the sun. Since the moon is then in close proximity to the sun in the sky, it cannot be seen (unless in silhouette during a solar eclipse).
In popular parlance, the term "new moon" refers to when the moon appears as a narrow sliver over the next few evenings, adding delicate beauty to the western twilight as a thin arc of light enclosing a ghostly ball. Here was the signal by which the ancients set their calendars.?
But how is it that we can see the entire outline of the moon when it's in its crescent phase? To answer this question, let?s imagine ourselves as astronauts on the surface of the moon.

Navy Launches Communications Satellite
CAPE CANAVERAL AIR FORCE STATION, Fla. (NNS) -- The Navy's first Mobile User Objective System satellite was launched Feb. 24 from Space Launch Complex 41.
MUOS is a next-generation narrowband tactical communications system designed to improve communications for U.S. forces on the move. MUOS will provide military users simultaneous voice, video and data capability by leveraging 3G mobile communications technology.
Born from the need for stable, 24/7 ship-to-shore communication that could be successful regardless of environments and geographical conditions, the Navy is responsible for providing narrowband satellite communication for the Department of Defense.
"MUOS' top requirements include capacity, coverage and link availabilities. It will provide 24 hours a day, seven days a week global coverage," said Navy Capt. Paul Ghyzel, MUOS program manager. "The ability for a warfighter to make a telephone call over a MUOS terminal and send data at 10 times more capacity than they can now will be a significant improvement."
For the Navy MUOS team, many of whom have spent years on the program, the successful launch is just the beginning of work to come. "We are very excited to see this milestone today. It's the end of one phase and the beginning of another," said Navy Cmdr. Jeff King, a MUOS systems engineer who worked on the program for three years.
King explained that upon separation from the launch vehicle the satellite will stay in a temporary orbital slot for initial testing.
"The satellite will spend the next several months in its geostationary orbit and be thoroughly checked out by the combined government and contractor team before being turned over for operational use."
Operational use, also known as initial operational capability, for the first MUOS satellite is expected in summer 2012. Control of the satellite will then be turned over to the Naval Satellite Operations Command in Point Mugu, Calif.
Ultimately, the MUOS constellation will consist of four satellites and an on-orbit spare. The system also includes four ground stations strategically located around the globe, which provide worldwide coverage and the ability to connect users wherever they are. The ground system transports data, manages the worldwide network and controls the satellites.
With today's narrowband communication system, users have to be stationary with an antenna up and pointed toward a satellite.
"With MUOS they'll be able to move around the battlespace," said King. "They'll be able to communicate to users on the other side of a mountain or the other side of the world."
Beyond providing continuous communication for all branches of the U.S. military, Navy provided space-based narrowband capability also ensures reliable worldwide coverage for national emergency assistance, disaster response and humanitarian relief.
The MUOS constellation is expected to achieve full operational capability in 2015, extending narrowband availability well past 2025.
Today's launch was originally scheduled for Feb. 16 and again Feb. 22, both canceled and rescheduled due to unfavorable weather conditions.
The program is managed by the Navy's Program Executive Office for Space Systems, Chantilly, Va., and its Communications Satellite Program Office in San Diego.

Can't get enough of books in India
The Jaipur Literary Festival in northern India attracts thousands of book-lovers, and provides greater access to literature for India's 1.2 billion population.

Skip to next paragraphThousands of people packed beneath an enormous tent at the Jaipur Literary Festival in Rajasthan, northwestern India, in January. They came to see talk show superstar Oprah Winfrey, one of the featured guests at the festival. Among her many accomplishments is her book club, which drove book sales into the millions. But, with no Oprah equivalent in India, the young people in this country are spearheading their own book clubs.
Sumeet Shetty is an example. When he?s not buying books, he?s inviting authors to speak at his company?s book club in Bangalore. With more than 500 active members, it?s one of the biggest on the subcontinent. Though that number is only a drop in the bucket in a country of 1.2 billion, it reflects a growing trend.
Literary festivals like Jaipur, one of the largest in South Asia, are exposing this generation to a variety of new authors. And, as the income of the middle class continues to rise, so does their appetite for buying books.
?My generation has so much more access to literature than my mother?s,? says Surabhi Bhatnagar, who started a book club at her university in Rajasthan. Though she plans to work in information technology, she says it is the writings of English author Virginia Woolf and works like ?Into the Wild,? by Jon Krakauer, that captivate her.
Though right now in India books sell mostly by word of mouth, perhaps it?s only a matter of time until this growing enthusiasm for literature blossoms into a world-renowned book club like Oprah?s.

France far-right leader: All Paris meat is halal
LILLE, France?? French far right leader Marine Le Pen switched her presidential campaign back to immigration, claiming all meat in Paris was halal, as she tries to head off President Nicolas Sarkozy's attempts to lure her supporters.
At a weekend congress of her National Front party in the northern city of Lille, Le Pen returned to familiar anti-immigration territory, saying she had proof that all meat in Paris was halal and that she would lodge legal complaints against distributors for misleading consumers.
"This situation is a real deception and the government has been fully aware of this situation for months," Le Pen told reporters on the sidelines of the conference. "All the abattoirs in the Paris region sell halal meat without exception."
Exploiting discontent over globalization and the debt crisis in Europe, Le Pen had sought to attract voters by shifting from a traditional emphasis on immigration and French identity to leaving the euro and imposing protectionist barriers.
Her stance struck a chord, especially among working class voters suffering economic hardship since the start of the global financial crisis. Le Pen stands third in polls behind Socialist candidate Francois Hollande and Sarkozy with two months to go before the first round of the presidential vote on April 22.
Sarkozy declares he's seeking second term
But most analysts deem her economic program as not credible and have questioned the strategy of shifting from the party's core message. Criticism of her economic policies has provided an opportunity for conservative Sarkozy to poach far-right voters as he did in 2007 when he ran on a strong security and immigration platform.
"Nicolas Sarkozy is trying to renew 2007 by encroaching on our turf," Nicolas Bay, Le Pen's adviser on immigration issues, told Reuters. "That means we have to go on the offensive as we have no intention of letting him do it again."
At one point in January, Le Pen was snapping at the conservative leader's heels, but a BVA poll Friday showed Sarkozy had an 11 point lead over her in the first round of the election, although Hollande would still comfortably beat the incumbent in the May 6 runoff.
Le Pen's National Front, founded 40 years ago by her ex-paratrooper father Jean-Marie, is still fuelled by anti-immigrant rhetoric. Among her ideas for protecting welfare are toughening citizenship requirements, shutting borders and forbidding foreigners from access to any social aid.
Bay said it was important that issues such as the halal claim were made public to show how Muslim values were increasingly influencing local policy and endangering France's secular tradition.
Sarkozy's government has toughened its message on immigration and in January it trumpeted the deportation of a record number of illegal migrants in 2011.

Bankruptcy court lets Washington Mutual reorganize
Bankruptcy reorganization calls for failed bank to distribute $7 billion to creditors and 418 million to shareholders. ?Bankruptcy proceedings took more than three years.
After a long and contentious legal battle and more than three years in?bankruptcy, Washington Mutual Inc. on Friday finally won court approval of a reorganization plan.
Skip to next paragraph"It took three and a half years, but I think the result is remarkable and well worth it," said Judge Mary Walrath, who had twice rejected reorganization plans filed by Washington Mutual before giving her blessing to a revised plan Washington Mutual submitted in December.
"I'm happy to confirm this plan," the judge added. "I thank all the parties for not giving up."
As with its earlier proposals, Washington Mutual's plan is based on WMI, JPMorgan Chase and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. settling lawsuits they filed against one another after the collapse of Seattle-based Washington Mutual Bank in 2008 and the sale of its assets to JPMorgan Chase & Co. for $1.9 billion. It was the largest bank failure in U.S. history.
The plan calls for some $7 billion to be distributed to creditors and includes significant recoveries for shareholders, who often are left with nothing in?bankruptcy?cases.
"This Chapter 11 plan is a tremendous success," said Washington Mutual attorney Brian Rosen.
In denying a previous WaMu plan in September, Walrath granted permission to the official committee of equity holders to pursue claims that hedge funds supporting the plan had engaged in insider trading based on information obtained during the?bankruptcy.
Following court-ordered mediation, the hedge funds agreed to provide $75 million in cash to the reorganized Washington Mutual, a small reinsurance company in which current Washington Mutual stockholders will hold 95 percent of the equity. The hedge funds also will provide a $125 million credit facility to the reorganized company. The hedge funds denied the allegations of insider trading.
Walrath agreed with Edgar Sargent, an attorney for the equity committee, that individual shareholders had played an extraordinary role in the case.
"I have never seen a case where the shareholders had been so active and so interested in what is going on, and what their rights are and how they can protect them," she said.
Having satisfied stockholders with the December revisions to its plan, Washington Mutual cleared away the final significant obstacle on Thursday, when it reached an agreement with a group of dissident creditors who had voted against the plan, which received overwhelming support from other creditor classes.
The dissident creditors held certain WaMu securities that were converted into preferred stock when regulators seized WMI's flagship bank and sold its assets to JPMorgan Chase. Facing far less chance of obtaining recoveries as stockholders rather than debt holders, only 62 percent of them voted for the plan, short of the required two-thirds majority. That raised questions as to whether Walrath could approve it.
But in return for rescinding their "no" votes and agreeing to support the plan, the securities investors will receive $18 million from JPMorgan and will be allowed a general unsecured claim of about $618,000. They also will be allowed to seek reimbursement of up to $15 million in legal fees without opposition from Washington Mutual or its official committee of unsecured creditors.
In approving Washington Mutual's plan, Walrath agreed to strike language in her September ruling that referred to the insider trading allegations against the hedge funds, a condition the hedge funds had demanded in the December settlement that paved the way for the plan.
While denying Washington Mutual's previous plans in January 2011 and again in September, Walrath ruled that the global settlement agreement among WMI, JPMorgan and the FDIC that was the foundation for the entire reorganization effort was fair and reasonable. She reiterated that finding on Friday, saying the agreement resolved "very thorny" issues that could have taken years to litigate.
