Zambia: Interview with Basement Entertainment | LusakaTimes.com

TIME PUBLISHED - Wednesday, August 29, 2012, 2:47 pm

Basement Entertainment is a?UK based Zambian events management and promotions company set out to?promote Zambian cultures and performing acts in the UK as well as?parts of Europe.

KAPA187:? ??How did Basement entertainment come about?

Basement entertainment: Wow, this takes us back; we came about out of the desire to do things differently and put the fun back into Djing.
In the early 2000s there was a group of us young Zambians, mostly students who used to come together at a friend?s flat at weekends and just play music the way we liked, putting our own stamp, swag and identity on it. Those early days developed our style, when you see us ?performing?; you get a glimpse of how we chill.

The founder members of the crew are Mr. Evans Miyanda (Team Patron), Oscar Miyanda (DJ Snypa), Harry Miyanda (Bugz Money), Milton Besa (DJ Milton Besa)?. ha ha ha?the only DJ who does not want a DJing name?lol! Other guys later joined us John Chinode Chisengalumbwe (Mc Jc Chinode II), Shawn L Sibamba (Big Shawn), Ray Nyakuchena (DJ Raypower our first Dual Zambia/Zimbabwean team member) and Andre Gordon (DJ Dre, our first Caribbean team member) with others on rotation across the UK. Our virtual existence in Zambia shall soon be a reality once our current mini team in Lusaka has completed logistical planning to operate in Zambia.

DJ Dre ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? DJ?Ray power?

It was actually at Milton?s penthouse in South East London (he lived above a shop, typical student accommodation?.ha ha ha.) where we came up with the name because his place felt like a basement though it was an upstairs flat and for some reason we were always there socializing, he could never get rid of us.

KAPA187:? ??What services do you provide?

Basement entertainment: We started out as DJs and were known as the Basement crew, until we branched out to music production when we co- produced Zambian musician TY2?s UK music project titled Nu Beginin? (Featuring his hit love song NIKUKONDE) in 2008, produced and recorded at Iguana studios in Brixton, South London at which time we changed our name to Basement Entertainment, which felt more business like, well, or so we thought.

Amongst other services, we provide public announcement systems on a corporate level e.g. one used during President Michael Sata recent visited to the UK, at the UK Zambian community dinner reception hosted at the Zambian high commissioner?s residence. We also provide music entertainment services, boasting of an all out experienced international DJ line-up, capable of handling any occasion around the world plus event venues, added to that, our in-house voice over artists, presenters with various event management and promotions solutions are on hand to provide a service, be it Zambian or other through our business networks across the UK. We also have an online presence where we host our very own online radio show (THE SHOW) at?http://www.basemententertainment.co.uk/?showcasing Zambian music and Dancehall music as enjoyed in the UK anchored by DJ Snypa, DJ Dre and Mc John Chinode II, supported by a live channel broadcast on Aggie rounds radio, UK.

Outside all these activities we work as volunteers with a UK based charity Butterfly tree that is headed by Jane Kay Bailey; Supporting rural communities in Zambia decimated by the HIV/Aids pandemic, providing safe water, feeding programs, improved health and education facilities with an orphan sponsorship program as well as supporting the fight against malaria in Zambia where together with the charity released a song titled ?Change For The Better? performed by Ty2, Kaufela, Late Crystal Shawn and Lillian Mweene produced and recorded at raising sound studios in Livingston, Zambia. (Find out more on how you can help atwww.thebutterflytree.org.uk)

You could say we are all round entertainers but also with a social responsibility for those in need back in Zambia.

KAPA187:? ?What is your opinion on the music industry in Zambia?

Basement entertainment: The scene is heading in the right the direction, we are particularly impressed with the strides made by Zambian hip hop, the industry now gets it, they are establishing an identity founded on being Zambian, they are not trying to imitate the American scene which is a major plus.

The management side of things still poor but there is room for it to develop; we think artist management and the industry regulatory system as a whole is still in its infancy. Zambian musicians are VERY creative and that is what they should concentrate on, issues like PR, marketing, legal and in general artist management should be handled by someone else not a friend. We are not saying it is not happening right now, we are just saying that there is a scope for growth and improvement.

KAPA187:? ?Which artists do you think are the best at this moment?

Basement entertainment: Truth be told, there far too many to mention.

KAPA187:? ?How do you promote Zambian music in UK, how has been the response?

Basement entertainment: We have a major platform with our online radio show as well as our mobile disco team with affiliation to some major UK radios and clubs. The response has been overwhelming, the emails, comments on our site and the feeling we get when we play out shows how much the music is loved by Zambians across the UK though this trend has grown as well within other communities where we have delivered the sounds from Zambia. We think mostly out of nostalgia, it is that connection with home. Zambians in the UK appreciate the music even more than people in Zambia especially judging by the requests we get as well as the missing home factor..

KAPA187:? ?Do you think Zambian comedians get enough exposure as compared to musicians?

Basement entertainment: Music is universal as they say; it is that factor that makes it more penetrative. Comedy is relative and if you cannot relate, it just is not funny. Issues like language are just some of the limiting factor or a major barrier for it to be accessible especially out here in the UK.

To make that transition from performing on the local scene to the international scene is not as easy for comedians as it is for Musicians that is the challenge.

KAPA187:? ?Who are some of your favorite Zambian Comedians?

Basement entertainment: Our very own Mc John Chinode II, you can catch him on our radio show. We like Bob Nkosha, Bikiloni and Diffikoti to mention but afew.

KAPA187:? ?It would seem easier to promote music internationally than a comedy act, due to cultural differences, what is your approach to promoting them and making sure they get enough exposure

Basement entertainment: We can only do so much; the onerous is pretty much on the artists themselves and their management companies. We can only expose what they present to us, we feel they need to really work on this aspect; they need to push and get their stuff out there where even a local Nigerian, English Man or Jamaican can relate.

KAPA187:? ?What other art forms do you cater to?

Basement entertainment: The Art of Life and staying safe especially amongst the youth, live by the rules. They are there for a reason to stay alive! Lol!

KAPA187:? ?How can the artists? get in touch with you?

Basement entertainment: Through our official website?www.basemententertainment.co.uk?or email?[email?protected]?as well as Facebook or Twitter.

KAPA187:? ?Any last words?.

Basement entertainment: Zambians world over should always remember Local is better. There is only one Zambia in the world which we all know is not going anywhere for generations to come. Let us, as Zambians support and stand by what?s Zambian if our industry is to move forward. Beside Zambia is the only home we have, lets be proud of the furniture we?ve put in it and in this case our entertainment industry it not always that international is better.

Finally, we are always looking for Zambian DJ?s and presenters for various community projects in your location, if anyone out there is interested contact us.

Lists of legal practitioners in several German districts | Lawn - Typepad

The German counselor-at-law can act as specialist or generalist. As our world is becoming more and more complicated, it might be a good idea to search an advocate who is specialized in a specific area of law. There are for example specialized legal practitioners for family law, employment law, tax law, insurance law, inheritance law, road traffic law, medical law and several others.

There are circa 150,000 lawyers offering their services on the German market. A German counselor-at-law either works as a entrepreneur or as an employee of a law association. The counselor-at-law is an independent part of the legal system. As a client persons have the right to choose your preferred advocate absolutely freely. That site contains a directory of attorneys assorted by German towns: Rechtsanwaelte Gelsenkirchen.

Your counselor-at-law is independent of any instructions of third parties and should only chase your specific requirements. They are not allowed to reveal information of the clients case to unauthorized people. Additionally, attorneys have the right to make binding statements on your behalf. Thus it is very important to find an advocate whom you really trust. German counselors-at-law could be searched for in specialized indexes of attorneys. Besides using Internet indexes you might find the right attorney by studying the local press or by asking friends for recommendations.

Before mandating a lawyer clients should think about the charges. A good defense assurance relieves your passage to the legal practitioner. Before consulting the advocate, the client can ask the legal expenses insurance if they agree to accept the costs from the first advice and consultation of the attorney. Then your attorney needs not to charge any payment in advance, and can concentrate entirely upon your case. It is not mandatory to visit different defense insurance providers by oneself when searching your personal solution.

Self-employed advocates face the same problems as any other business owner. They are in need of opportunities to promote their businesses effectively and at low costs. The Internet offers a lot of opportunities to accomplish that. There are already several registers of German counselors-at-law online. Some of them charge a one time rate, and some of them do recurring charging. Attorneys could advertise their businesses in the following index of German legal practitioners: Rechtsanwalt Bremen. It is cost-free at the time of this writing.

Everyone once can get involved in a law suit and might need legal advice. Then it is convenient if you do not have to worry about the charges. Often legitimate claims are not pursued due to fear of the cost risk. Likewise, a legal defense against unwarranted claims is often not taken due to the threat of legal charges and court costs. The client can arrange a legal expenses insurance on individual requirements and get only those fields in the insurance coverage which are most important. By arranging a deductible, one can reach nice savings in the current contribution payment for the legal protection assurance

Sony's Xperia J arrives in style and on budget, we go hands-on

The Xperia T may have been Sony's flagship phone for this year's IFA, but the company's promised some style for a tighter budget in the form of the Xperia J -- what exactly "budget" means in this case, we're not exactly sure. The style thing we get, however -- the J's a pretty nice looking phone and clearly in the aesthetic vein of its Sony Xperia brethren. The 4-inch FWVGA display is nice and bright (we had to turn it down a bit, even with that white Sony tablecloth in the background) and fairly shiny, offset by a matte black back.

At 9.2mm, Sony's talking up the handset's svelte design. And it's certainly slimmer than a lot of handset we've seen -- though not even closest to the slimmest. It's also not the most powerful handset we've seen by any stretch with a 1GHZ single-core processor inside, but it does a zippy enough job with the Ice Cream Sandwich it's rocking. All in all, the J seems like a fairly solid choice for those who don't want to shell out an arm and a leg on its bigger brother -- although we'll hold off full judgement until we figure out exactly what "budget" means. Check out our hands-on video after the break.

Toni Morrison, Nora Ephron, and Dozens More Offer Advice in Free ...

If you?re anything like me, you yearn to become a good writer, a better writer, an inspiring writer, even, by learning from the writers you admire. But you neither have the time nor the money for an MFA program or expensive retreats and workshops with famous names. So you read W.H. Auden?s essays?and?Paris Review interviews with your favorite authors (or at least PR?s?Twitter feed); you obsessively trawl the archives of The?New York Times? ?Writers on Writing? series, and you relish every Youtube clip, no matter how lo-fi or truncated, of your literary heroes, speaking from beyond the grave, or from behind a podium at the 92nd?Street Y.

Well, friend, you are in luck (okay, I?m still talking about me here, but maybe about you, too). The Washington, DC-based non-profit Academy of Achievement?whose mission is to ?bring students face-to-face? with leaders in the arts, business, politics, science, and sports?has archived a series of talks from an incredibly diverse pool of poets and writers. They call this collection ?Creative Writing: A Master Class,? and you can subscribe to it right now on iTunes and begin downloading free video and audio podcasts from?Nora Ephron, John Updike, Toni Morrison, Carlos Fuentes, Norman Mailer, Wallace Stegner, and, well, you know how the list goes.

The Academy of Achievement?s website also features lengthy profiles?with text and downloadable audio and video?of several of the same writers from their ?Master Class? series. For example, an interview with former U.S. poet-laureate Rita Dove?is illuminating, both for writers and for teachers of writing. Dove talks about the aversion that many people have for poetry as a kind of fear inculcated by clumsy teachers. She explains:

At some point in their life, they?ve been given a poem to interpret and told, ?That was the wrong answer.? You know. I think we?ve all gone through that. I went through that. And it?s unfortunate that sometimes in schools ? this need to have things quantified and graded ? we end up doing this kind of multiple choice approach to something that should be as ambiguous and ever-changing as life itself. So I try to ask them, ?Have you ever heard a good joke?? If you?ve ever heard someone tell a joke just right, with the right pacing, then you?re already on the way to the poetry. Because it?s really about using words in very precise ways and also using gesture as it goes through language, not the gesture of your hands, but how language creates a mood. And you know, who can resist a good joke? When they get that far, then they can realize that poetry can also be fun.

Dove?s thoughts on her own life, her work, and the craft of poetry and teaching are well worth reading/watching in full. Another particularly notable interview from the Academy is with another former laureate, poet W.S. Merwin.

Merwin, a two-time Pulitzer Prize winner, discusses poetry as originating with language, and its loss as tantamount to extinction:

When we talk about the extinction of species, I think the endangered species of the arts and of language and all these things are related. I don?t think there is any doubt about that. I think poetry goes back to the invention of language itself. I think one of the big differences between poetry and prose is that prose is about something, it?s got a subject? poetry is about what can?t be said. Why do people turn to poetry when all of a sudden the Twin Towers get hit, or when their marriage breaks up, or when the person they love most in the world drops dead in the same room? Because they can?t say it. They can?t say it at all, and they want something that addresses what can?t be said.

If you?re anything like me, you find these two perspectives on poetry?as akin to jokes, as saying the unsayable?fascinating. These kinds of observations (not mechanical how-to?s, but original thoughts on the process and practice of writing itself) are the reason I pore over ?interviews and seminars with writers I admire. I found more than enough in this archive to keep me satisfied for months.

We?ve added ?Creative Writing: A Master Class? to?our ever-growing collection of Free Online Courses.

(AP) ? Rick Santorum was one of Mitt Romney's toughest foes during the GOP presidential race, but the former Pennsylvania senator plans to help Romney appeal to the party's conservative base when he addresses the Republican National Convention.

His speech Tuesday is expected to focus on welfare reform and charges that President Barack Obama wants to undermine welfare work requirements.

In an appearance on "CBS This Morning," Santorum called Obama's plan to issue waivers to states that want to test alternative welfare policies "a very, very serious assault" on welfare reform. White House officials have said Republicans are being misleading.

Santorum played a central role for Republicans when the 1996 welfare reform law was being debated.

He says his speech will convince voters that Obama's policies are leaving them behind.
