May saw growth in jobs and job seekers

Washington's jobs picture brightened significantly in May, with estimated net growth of 11,700 jobs, according to the state's Employment Security Department.

The estimated unemployment rate also rose slightly, from April's revised rate of 8.2 percent to 8.3 percent in May.

Employment Security economist Anneliese Vance-Sherman said the higher unemployment rate was caused primarily by more unemployed people re-entering the job market. The unemployment rate is calculated by dividing the estimated number of unemployed people who have looked for work within the past four weeks by the total civilian labor force.

"In this case, the higher unemployment rate could be a sign that people are feeling more optimistic about their chances of finding a job," said Vance-Sherman.

As another sign of optimism, the professional and business services sector accounted for nearly half of the estimated net job growth in May, with much of it occurring in the employment-services industry.

"Businesses often turn to temp agencies when they're ready to start hiring again, so we're excited when we see job growth in that area," Vance-Sherman said.

Industry sectors that added the most jobs in May were professional and business services, up by an estimated 5,400 jobs; transportation, warehousing and utilities, which added 2,600; wholesale trade, up 1,900; manufacturing, up 1,400; construction, up 1,200; financial activities, up 1,000; retail trade, up 400; and education & health services, up 400.

Government employment continued to drop, losing an estimated 2,600 jobs in May. Leisure and hospitality lost 200 jobs, and the information sector lost an estimated 100 jobs.

Within the government sector, federal employment in Washington dropped by 1,100 jobs, state agencies lost an estimated 700 jobs, local government and K-12 schools lost 300 jobs each, and public higher education lost 200 jobs.

With May's job gains, Washington has regained an estimated 102,500 jobs since the low point of the recession.

In May, an estimated 292,600 people (seasonally adjusted) in Washington were unemployed and looking for work.

WorkSource is a statewide partnership that includes Employment Security, local workforce development councils, and other state, local and nonprofit agencies that provide a comprehensive array of employment and training services. When I use the Google Music app on my HTC Thunderbolt the music is not correctly sorted. When I try to play Steve Miller Band's "Greatest Hits" album it also lists the songs from Cheap Trick, Tom Petty and every other band's "Greatest Hits" albums I have. It appears to be grouping all of the albums with the title "Greatest Hits" together. However, when I view my music online the incorrect grouping does not occur so I can listen to the desired album by streaming to my computer just fine.

Also, when I view the albums online each has the correct album art and band name but on my phone all of them default to the Cheap Trick album art and Tom Petty band name.

Any ideas how to correct this?

Getting paid handsomely for a job well done is one thing. But receiving ultra-generous generous while your company is sinking? That's another matter altogether.

An SEC filing disclosed that Research in Motion (RIMM) gave its departing founders and co-CEOs a combined $12 million in compensation for its latest fiscal year, even though they were relieved of their executive duties in January.

Nevertheless RIM paid Balsillie nearly $8 million, including nearly $5 million in severance, while Lazaridis got $4 million, according to All Things D.

Multimillion-dollar paychecks for top executives seem discordant when shareholder value is evaporating, but compensation experts say the link between executive pay and performance has weakened even as the size of those compensation packages skyrockets.

"The connection between performance and pay is getting more and more attenuated," said?Kent Greenfield, professor at Boston College Law School.?

According to the AFL-CIO's annual survey on executive compensation, CEO pay at companies in the S&P 500 rose nearly 14 percent in 2011 to an average of $12.94 million.

There is somewhat of a herd mentality among the compensation committees on corporations' boards that are responsible for executive pay, which is a contributing factor to the disconnect, Greenfield said.

"They'll take a look at what competitors are paying their executives and peg their compensation above the average," he said. Since everyone wants to be above the middle of the bell curve, the result is an ongoing inflation of pay packages, Greenfield said. "They think these CEOs are like Lebron James."

When a company is performing well, benchmarking against what competitors pay makes sense, especially in the tech industry, where only a small pool of people have the vision and skills to turn evolving ideas into revenue.

"In order to attract the best talent, companies have to be willing to pay," said?Geoff Hoffmann, COO at executive search firm DHR International. "Sometimes it works out, other times it doesn't."?

Barry Reiter, senior partner at law firm Bennett Jones LLP, said there are varying degrees to which companies try to make compensation committee members act in shareholders' best interests. "Some of the better companies have the requirement that ... a lot of what they get paid for the first few years is plowed into the stock," he said.

Board and committee members can sometimes have their own priorities, though. "It's a networking thing, it's a prestige thing," Reiter said. "It tends to be an important thing to the people who do it and that sort of is a thing that undercuts the notion of independence even if you have no other ties to the company." If a CEO has a lot of influence over member selection, those directors could be motivated to approve higher compensation.

This financial arms race has broader consequences, Greenfield warned. "It's harmful for the economy," he said, pointing out that outsized pay packages for executives at troubled companies come at the expense of employees and shareholders. "A?democracy can't survive when there's such extraordinary inequality," he said.??

A research paper by?Emmanuel Saez, a professor at the University of California, Berkeley,?found that 93 percent of income gains in the post-recession recovery went to the wealthiest 1 percent. In 2010, income for the top 1 percent grew nearly 12 percent. For everyone else, the income gain was only 0.2 percent. 2012 LZ1 just popped onto astronomers' radar this week. It was discovered on the night of June 10-11 by Rob McNaught and his colleagues, who were peering through the Uppsala Schmidt telescope at Siding Spring Observatory in Australia.

Researchers estimate that the space rock is between 1,000 and 2,300 feet wide. On Thursday evening, it will come within about 3.35 million miles of our planet, or roughly 14 times the distance between Earth and the moon.

Because of its size and proximity to Earth, 2012 LZ1 qualifies as a potentially hazardous asteroid. Near-Earth asteroids generally have to be at least 500 feet wide and come within 4.65 million miles of our planet to be classified as potentially hazardous.

2012 LZ1 is roughly the same size as asteroid 2005 YU55, which made a much-anticipated flyby of Earth last November. But 2005 YU55 gave our planet a much closer shave, coming within 202,000 miles of us on the evening of Nov. 8. A space rock as big as 2005 YU55 hadn't come so close to Earth since 1976, researchers said.

Astronomers have identified nearly 9,000 near-Earth asteroids, but they think many more are out there, waiting to be discovered.
